Topic: baby bjorn carriers Posted: 30 October 2009 at 6:32pm |
Sorry I know this should be in product reviews but I kinda wanted a quick reply. I have a moby wrap and want something more structured and also ok for my husband (he wont wear the moby) I saw the bjorn at the parent and child show today, are these any good? Is there something better but in a similar style? needs to be able to face in or out.
Will be back at the show tomorrow am, so might buy it if others have had success with them.
TIA

We have one and Dh loves it. He wears both the Moby and Bjorn but at the moment still prefers the Bjorn. I prefer the Moby though.
Not too sure if there is anything better as we only have the Bjorn and Moby. The Bjorn is pretty well structured and can face baby both ways.

Personally I wouldn't get a Bjorn - I would go for a Beco, Ergo or Patapum..
Where is Hippymama and/or Weegee?? I'm sure they'll be able to explain things to you. Or check out the slingbabies site.

I personally don't like Bjorns as you can't back carry. And they're soooo expensive for what they are, I'd much rather get an Ergo or Manduca. Although they don't face out.
The design of it means that baby is supporting all their weight on their pelvis whereas carriers like Anna mentioned spread the weight over baby's thighs, as they're supported from under one knee to the other... iykwim.
I've not tried a Beco but hear loads of good things, and I think you might be able to face out with them???

I'm here! LOL
Please, I'm begging you, don't get a Bjorn - they are really poorly designed in terms of proper support for baby's spinal structure as a whole... the less popular nickname for that style of carrier is a 'crotch dangler" as it cuts in right under bubs spine and puts the bulk of the pressure there, not to mention the weight is also centered on your shoulders which is a real drag.
I would also look at something more like an Ergo / Beco / Patapum or my personal favorite is the Kozy... sadly though the Kozy retailer for NZ is not exhibiting at the P&C show this year but you can buy via Aquabub
These sorts of carriers support the babes spine and hips, can also face inwards or outwards on the front, as well as back and hip carry.
I'd highly recommend checking out this particular link from the Slingbabies site: 'Correct Positioning' by M'liss Stelzer

Haha lol I'm putting my feet up after a long day selling Moby wraps
I agree, I personally wouldn't go for a Baby Bjorn at all. Arguably because baby is essentially hanging by the crotch it's not that great for their spine, a wrap or SSC (soft structured carrier) are much better.
(That said I'm sure a Bjorn would be ok for short periods and is possibly still better than a buggy? No personal experience though)
Show your DH some of the pics in the baby wearing pics thread in the photo gallery, there are a few men wearning bubs in a wrap!
But if he won't do a wrap then he might like something with bells and whistles (men seem to like buckles!) like an Ergo or Patapum (a Beco is lovely but pricey and not very manly IMO!) or my favourite SSC, a Manduca. Or a mei tai type carrier like a Kozy? (There are some quite manly Kozy prints)

I have used a Bjorn (not with Callum but in my job) and we have an Ergo for Callum and I am with the others - an Ergo-type carrier is WAY more comfortable for you AND for bub. My DH will happily wear C in the Ergo, it's manly enough
The downside is that they can't face forward in the front carry position, but they do the back and hip carry (unlike a Bjorn). ALSO they will last way longer. Most of my friends with Bjorns had to stop using them from around 8 or 9 months as their babies were too heavy to carry with all the weight supported by they poor shoulders!

LOL snap! Sorry cross posted while I was faffing about getting links right.
You can face outwards with an SSC SoyBasedMama, you just have to make sure they're sort of angled backwards, sitting. Can be tricky to get right the first couple of times but it is possible.

No not a bjorn!
I vote for an ergo, manduca, mei tai or similar. Check out the sling babies site listed above.

Me again! If forward facing is really important to you then a Pikkolo is prob the SSC best designed to allow it.
Although I will add this snippet on front facing:
when baby is facing you, he can look sideways and still see lots of the world, but he can also look up at mom or dad for reassurance, and he can turn away from stimulation. When a baby is forward-facing, you can't see his face to read his expression (ie, if Junior is getting upset), and baby cannot turn away from stimulation (not to mention well-meaning strangers who have boundary issues!). Front-facing carriers also force the baby's spine into an unnatural position, whereas (SSCs) follow the natural curve of baby's spine.

Yep im with all the others (add to that the baby bjorn is ugly)
Beco probably wouldnt be manly enough. Patapum is usually a mans fav as its pretty plain. My DH will wear anything, even my Hawaiian print Ergo

Kozy Carriers are reversible too so if daddy doesn't like the print you can face it in so it's not as visible
One of my *cough*two*cough* Kozy's is the Pembroke print which DH has agreed "isn't too bad" LOL

You'd be able to stick his legs out by now instead of having them frogged up I reckon J, or even face outward if you think his head control is up to it. Next Slingbabies meeting is only a week away too!

wow thanks ladies, we won't be getting the bjorn now!
Its also me who (very sadly) doesn't enjoy my moby as much as I did when she was little. We live on a farm, I need something structured and fast to put on, I really wish I liked my moby more but I hate tying it and getting her in it sorry to all the moby lovers!
Ok so looks like:
Ergo,
Pikkolo
manduca
patapum
kozy
Beco
are the most popular types. I have been all over the slingbabies site, but just much easier to get 'personal' recommendations from knowledgeable ladies! Will be doing some research now on those types, please let me know if there are any other suggestions!
Thanks everyone you are all fab!
