Sorry I know this should be in product reviews but I kinda wanted a quick reply. I have a moby wrap and want something more structured and also ok for my husband (he wont wear the moby) I saw the bjorn at the parent and child show today, are these any good? Is there something better but in a similar style? needs to be able to face in or out.

Will be back at the show tomorrow am, so might buy it if others have had success with them.
TIA

We have one and Dh loves it. He wears both the Moby and Bjorn but at the moment still prefers the Bjorn. I prefer the Moby though.

Not too sure if there is anything better as we only have the Bjorn and Moby. The Bjorn is pretty well structured and can face baby both ways.

Personally I wouldn't get a Bjorn - I would go for a Beco, Ergo or Patapum..

Where is Hippymama and/or Weegee?? I'm sure they'll be able to explain things to you. Or check out the http://www.slingbabies.co.nz/Site/Asian-Style.ashx - slingbabies site.

I personally don't like Bjorns as you can't back carry. And they're soooo expensive for what they are, I'd much rather get an Ergo or Manduca. Although they don't face out.

The design of it means that baby is supporting all their weight on their pelvis whereas carriers like Anna mentioned spread the weight over baby's thighs, as they're supported from under one knee to the other... iykwim.

I've not tried a Beco but hear loads of good things, and I think you might be able to face out with them???

I'm here! LOL

Please, I'm begging you, don't get a Bjorn - they are really poorly designed in terms of proper support for baby's spinal structure as a whole... the less popular nickname for that style of carrier is a 'crotch dangler" as it cuts in right under bubs spine and puts the bulk of the pressure there, not to mention the weight is also centered on your shoulders which is a real drag.

I would also look at something more like an Ergo / Beco / Patapum or my personal favorite is the Kozy... sadly though the Kozy retailer for NZ is not exhibiting at the P&C show this year but you can buy via "http://www.aquabub.co.nz" - Aquabub

These sorts of carriers support the babes spine and hips, can also face inwards or outwards on the front, as well as back and hip carry.

I'd highly recommend checking out this particular link from the Slingbabies site: "http://www.slingbabies.co.nz/Site/Positioning/Correct_Positioning_by_M_liss_Stelzer.ashx" - 'Correct Positioning' by M'liss Stelzer

Haha lol I'm putting my feet up after a long day selling Moby wraps

I agree, I personally wouldn't go for a Baby Bjorn at all. Arguably because baby is essentially hanging by the crotch it's not that great for their spine, a wrap or SSC (soft structured carrier) are much better.

(That said I'm sure a Bjorn would be ok for short periods and is possibly still better than a buggy? No personal experience though)

Show your DH some of the pics in the baby wearing pics thread in the photo gallery, there are a few men wearning bubs in a wrap!

But if he won't do a wrap then he might like something with bells and whistles (men seem to like buckles!) like an http://www.bellybeyond.co.nz/shop/Babywearing+ErgoBaby+DulceZoet+baby+slings+Moby+Wrap/Ergo+Baby+Carrier+only+%24197.html - Ergo or http://www.bumbles.co.nz/products/Patapum-Baby-Carrier.html - Patapum (a http://www.tweedle.co.nz/tweedle/products.aspx?section=6&category=71 - Beco is lovely but pricey and not very manly IMO!) or my favourite SSC, a http://www.preciousbubba.com - Manduca . Or a mei tai type carrier like a http://www.aquabub.co.nz/contents/en-us/d41.html - Kozy ? (There are some quite manly Kozy prints)

I have used a Bjorn (not with Callum but in my job) and we have an Ergo for Callum and I am with the others - an Ergo-type carrier is WAY more comfortable for you AND for bub. My DH will happily wear C in the Ergo, it's manly enough

The downside is that they can't face forward in the front carry position, but they do the back and hip carry (unlike a Bjorn). ALSO they will last way longer. Most of my friends with Bjorns had to stop using them from around 8 or 9 months as their babies were too heavy to carry with all the weight supported by they poor shoulders!

LOL snap! Sorry cross posted while I was faffing about getting links right.

You can face outwards with an SSC SoyBasedMama, you just have to make sure they're sort of angled backwards, sitting. Can be tricky to get right the first couple of times but it is possible.

I vote for an ergo, manduca, mei tai or similar. Check out the sling babies site listed above.

Me again! If forward facing is really important to you then a http://www.bumbles.co.nz/products/Pikkolo-Baby-Carrier.html - Pikkolo is prob the SSC best designed to allow it.

Although I will add this snippet on front facing:
when baby is facing you, he can look sideways and still see lots of the world, but he can also look up at mom or dad for reassurance, and he can turn away from stimulation. When a baby is forward-facing, you can't see his face to read his expression (ie, if Junior is getting upset), and baby cannot turn away from stimulation (not to mention well-meaning strangers who have boundary issues!). Front-facing carriers also force the baby's spine into an unnatural position, whereas (SSCs) follow the natural curve of baby's spine.

Yep im with all the others (add to that the baby bjorn is ugly)

Beco probably wouldnt be manly enough. Patapum is usually a mans fav as its pretty plain. My DH will wear anything, even my Hawaiian print Ergo

Kozy Carriers are reversible too so if daddy doesn't like the print you can face it in so it's not as visible

One of my *cough*two*cough* Kozy's is the Pembroke print which DH has agreed "isn't too bad" LOL

You'd be able to stick his legs out by now instead of having them frogged up I reckon J, or even face outward if you think his head control is up to it. Next Slingbabies meeting is only a week away too!

wow thanks ladies, we won't be getting the bjorn now!
Its also me who (very sadly) doesn't enjoy my moby as much as I did when she was little. We live on a farm, I need something structured and fast to put on, I really wish I liked my moby more but I hate tying it and getting her in it sorry to all the moby lovers!
Ok so looks like:
Ergo,
Pikkolo
manduca
patapum
kozy
Beco

are the most popular types. I have been all over the slingbabies site, but just much easier to get 'personal' recommendations from knowledgeable ladies! Will be doing some research now on those types, please let me know if there are any other suggestions!
Thanks everyone you are all fab!

ok we have looked at all the sites and quickly gone through the positioning info and it looks like the manduca is the most suitable for us. Its a much better carrier for her hips/spine right? I quite like the kozy, but DH thinks the manduca looks more comfy for the parent?

They would both be the same comfort wise (the Kozy might be slightly comfier for the parent) - well my DH thinks so, but its a personal thing really.

I second coming along to the Slingbabies meeting on Friday - they have a *huge* library of all kinds of different slings.

But given that I heart the Kozy heaps, I have to say that I wore it at the P&C show yesterday from 9am-5pm with a couple of breaks for feeds and it was still awesome comfort wise - the shoulder straps are nice and wide and have extra padding in them.

I wish there were a Slingbabies in Christchurch!!!

But since all you knowledgable ladies are here, I've tried a Manduca, Patapum and Pikkolo before, and generally found the Manduca and Patapum to be "much-the-same" (though we actually were able to borrow a Manduca for the weekend so I like it more for that reason!), but I tried an Ergo on too and I like that it has a pocket out the front that would fit my keys, wallet and phone in.

Do you think that that's a good enough reason to go with the Ergo over the others??

Oh and any tips for a newbie Moby back carrier!?

Oh and also, would you say that a SSC is cooler/more practical in the summer than a Moby?

Posted By: HippyMama
Date Posted: 31 October 2009 at 12:34pm
I wouldn't necessarily say a SSC is cooler but maybe more practical, the Moby fabric is fairly lightweight and would still be OK on hot days in a lighter color - wouldn't want to have a black one in the middler of summer though!

For back carrying I am not so sure I'd use the Moby but know that people can and do, woven wraps are a lot sturdier and IME will last longer in terms of bubs getting bigger.

I am a fan of Ergo's too though and have one in organic chocolate - the front pocket and sleeping hood are a definite bonus, though I'll be completely honest and say the only other one I've actually tried on is a Patapum and I preferred the Ergo over it.

I'll give the Ergo another plug I it!!! The front pocket is great, if we're going out on the train I will pop in a couple of sposies, wipes, small purse, house keys and a dummy so it's really handy.

We live in Singapore, in year-round 30+ degree heat and high humidity and yes it's hot wearing a baby, but it's hot anyway so we do it I wish I'd got hold of a Moby as soon as we knew C was coming early as he was too small for the Ergo for a couple of months and we didn't get the ring sling till later.

I have seen a few people walking round with teeny bubs in Mobys here and they didn't look any more hot & bothered than the rest of us

I can't decide between the ergo and the manduca!
Does anyone have a manduca, its hard to see how comfy the shoulder straps will be from the pics on the website. I tried the ergo at the P & C show, it looks ok, it was hard to tell as we didn't have DH with us.
Any suggestions?

I just recently won an Ergo and it's great! I was struggling with a too small front pack and a ring sling which bubs is way to heavy for these days. The Ergo is also manly (DH kept offering to carry her when we went to the beach ) and she loved being on my back looking out. The other day when we were having 'one of those days' I popped her in it, she fell asleep (yay) and I made a cake!

The manduca straps are padded, but not as padded as Ergo straps, but I would think they are just as comfy.

For the amount of money you are thinking of spending, I would go and try one on.

I my Manduca, it's very comfy and easy to position baby and take on and off, although I'm now a size 8 (yay breastfeeding weight loss rocks) and I have to tighten it a little more than the strap really allows for, the buckle is past the webbing bit if you get what I mean. So skinny ladies really should try one on to make sure it'll still be comfortable.

I always use the Manduca over anything else when I want to back carry because it's that much easier to do.

There's a page comparing the Ergo and the Manduca http://extraordinarybabyshoppe.blogspot.com/2009/08/product-comparison-ergo-vs-manduca.html - here

My DH calls our Manduca the "man-can-do"

Teehee .. I doubt many women cross the straps over the front when doing a back carry .. ... unless of course you have no boobies

Weegee, have you tried a Beco?? Thoughts?

Posted By: weegee
Date Posted: 02 November 2009 at 5:04pm
Haha I have no boobies but still don't cross over the straps (it's easier to put it on without doing it that way).

I haven't tried a Beco (I think lilfatty has, and obviously Tweedle Rachael has!). They do look lovely though. I'm a bit torn about the layer between you and bubs - on the one hand I prefer bubs to be right next to me, on the other hand I think it'd be great to be able to take carrier and baby off in one piece and swap them over to DH. IMO it seems you're paying a little bit more for the prettiness factor but like I said I haven't tried it. It does look cosy for wee ones...

I found it uncomfortable as the part that comes between you and the baby comes quite high up (think t-shirt height with round neck hole), so I felt kind of suffocated (although im quite short so if you are taller, it might be less constricting.)

I thought it was the prettiest, but it was too uncomfy for me and had far too many clips

I brought a Moby from the P and C show on Sunday and I it so much already! I just had an old ring sling that my aunt had given me and a Tomy safari thing and I hated both of them. The girls hated the ring sling and the stupid Tomy thing never really fitted around my boobs. I mean I im not skinny but its not like I am obese.
Still, it takes me about the same amount of time getting the Moby on than it did wrestling a girl in the front pack.

Hehe now I think I need two new carriers, the Kozy looks so cool too!

Maybe the manduca for DH and a Kozy for me
