Those of you that had bad first births...

hey newmummy. my first was pretty rough... not particularly long, (10hrs all up) however approx 3 hours of pushing, and then a big cut and my poor babies head was very bruised as he'd been stuck for a long tiem....
BUT 2nd time I started labour at aobut 1.30am, into hospital by about 3.15am, and started pushing at 4am, out by 4.15am! home by 7am!!! WAY better! I had him standing up!!! so much quicker than the first time.....!! and I was really worried I'd 'tear' where I had my episiotomy the first time, but I didnt, had a small tear in another area, but it healed up really fast compared to the first time!!

Gas, pethidene, epidural, forceps & episiotomy for my first. Totally natural for my second and a homebirth for my last.

IMHO I think your mindset has a lot to do with it (apart from things out of your control) and if you go with the pain instead of fighting it, it makes things much easier. All my labours were similar in length and stages - just my approach different after my first experience.

Newmummy, maybe you should get a copy of The Pink Kit (http://www.thepinkkit.com/).  You can buy it online, there are probably copies on TM and I borrowed my copy from my midwife.  There's also a special extra CD available for women who had a traumatic first birth.

Ain't that the truth!

I've never had a traumatic/bad birth but mine did get better each time - Maya was 1 1/2 hours of pushing after 3 days of posterior labour hell, gremlins were 6 hours and Chiara was less than 2.

know what you are saying ...my first i was critical that they brought family in to say goodbye to me.......(im to much of a b'[tch to leave) i just found out that im pregnant again and i just spoke to midwife to tell her that i was stressing big time...........she said that it will be much better as my body had gone through everything but im not trusting anyone....this one is planned as after this one i have to have an op so cant have anymore and was determined to have a brother or sis for Ty ...i was like you and wanted water birth............good news is that this time im having 2 specialists and my midwife is an old Nurse. There wont be a day that goes by that im not worried but as long as the baby is fine then it is all worth it and compared to the pain they go through this is nothing..................good luck hun :)

My first one was hard - 48 hours first stage labour, induced and then 12 hours second stage and ended up having an epidural with a 2 hour final pushing stage. Ended up with stitches, grazes, damaged ligaments in my knees and very sore all over. Was very traumatic especially when I was lucid with not adequate pain relief.

Second time round was fantastic - and with twins! Three hours established labour, 1 1/2 hours pushing with no pain relief except gas. First twin born head down and fairly easily, second twin turned and came out footling breach 20 mins after first twin. No stitches, no major pains and within 12 hours felt as if I had never been through labour.

I would highly recommend it again, the second time round!
