Topic: Sling in winter Posted: 08 May 2009 at 10:36am |
Hi there, My baby is due in July and I want to carry her in a sling but my concern is that it is rather cold and windy in the winter time. How should I keep her warm then? Put a snowsuit on, wrap her with a blanket?? Or is it just a bad idea to use a sling in winter?'

i suppose you could wear a poncho?
i carried my baby using a mei tei, so she was kept warm by my body heat and i wore a cardy or jacket that would do up round both of us! she kept me warm and cozy!

nah its a great idea. i did it with my neice when i was looking after her and the cold isnt a problem, they keep pretty toastie if you wrap them up well and cover them in blankets although once they are too big to lie down in there and have little feet or heads protruding they can lose alot more body heat so if it was absolutely freezing and you had to be outside for a long time im not sure, depends how cold it gets where your from. i still have no solution to the rain though, never quite figured that one out. lol. if your only doing short runs between building in the rain you could just cover it but if your walking round the block or any reasonable distance it might wet the material causing bubs to get chilled. ill be using a sling for my boy too because i find buggies bulky and a pain in the bum but if the weather is really bad its probably the better option

I think you cannot carry newborns in a mei tei or similar carrier until they have some head control, can you?

When I have Mika in the moby wrap (you can use that for newborn) I use one of of DH'sjackets. It's great, cause she gets my body warmth against her front, the jacket over her back, but her head is not covered by the jacket, so she won't suffocate. (I do put her little merino hat on, as her head is sticking out of the jacket)

I had lil miss in the Moby from new, and like Ella said my body warmth helped keep her warm (in the summer I would strip her to her nappy so she didn't overhead lol). I would just tuck her head under one of the side flaps so all that was exposed was a tiny bit of her nose and mouth and that was she was all nice and snuggly.

yep you can. had her on my front, facing in, froggy style, so legs pulled up, and the top of the carrier came up to the top of her head too.

Or you could get one of THESE
Seriously, I use/d a Moby Wrap.
Over winter last year Hannah was 3-6 months. She'd just snuggle in (I'd also dress her in layers, obviously). If we were going to be outdoors for a length of time I'd have a blanket over us, too.
But when indoors she was warm enough against my chest.

I used a sling, just wrapped him up. My sling had merino lining so it was nice and snuggly.

Hehe, monihah, this is what I am looking for too. I need a perfect solution for uni. Have no idea how it's possible to climb with a pram in kelburn or go to the library

I cart Cooper round in my moby wrap for school drop offs & pick ups.
I have him towards my tummy frog style & then I have my big jacket zipped up, toasty warm.
If it's super cold or windy I tuck his head under the shoulder strap & have the other bit over his face as well. He's always asleep so is not bothered by that, I keep my hand there as well to keep the air flowing.
I also find it very easy to cart stuff around as I have two hands free & I can also eat quite comfortably with him on me as well.
eta: It's super comfy, you keep warm as well & no aches & pains & it feels just like being pregnant as well Plus you can breast feed in it.

I am anbother that used the moby wrap and found she was always toasty. I usually would have her dressed warm, thermals, jerseys, and hat and mittens, and half the time I would end up having to strip her down, even right in the middle of winter.
If it were really cold I would often just throw a large jacket over top (mainly to keep me warm) And it worked fine.

I LOVE my naturesway sling and so does Layla. I use her merino wrap and beanie, and when it gets colder, I'll use an additional blanket. Love the idea of a big jacket so we're both toastie warm!

For sure you can use the sling in the winter. Like the others said, you just wear a jacket over to keep them warmer, wrap them in blankets etc. DS isn't too crazy bout the sling I bought (wish I would've bought a nicer one with better head support...) but I'd be using it if I could. I got a frontpack that will be well used once it arrives! (been waiting for ages it seems...)
