Topic: getting baby used to portacot Posted: 07 January 2009 at 12:23pm |
ok so say you have set up the portacot in baby's room and have them sleep in it during their days sleeps but all they do is cry (eventually they do fall asleep)(talking a baby over 12 months) you do this for several weeks.
then you go away and have them sleep in same portacot but again all they do is cry taking many hours to get to sleep.
sleeping in your bed is not an option.

Ours doesn't fit in the boot, but it fits nicely behind the front seats and Daniel enjoyed kicking it through the journey

Hmm, that's a tough one, I set our girls portacot up in the lounge 1st and let her play in it for a day, then the next day I made it up in her room so she could see it when she went to sleep, that night I put her down for the night in her cot but when she woke up for her 4am feed I put her into the portacot instead of her normal bed (she's only half awake and i used her favourite sheets and blanket so it smelled like her bed). the following night I put her down for all naps and the night in her portacot. We went away for 3days (2nights) a week later and it takes her a little longer to sette but she sleeps ok in it.

we didn't have any issues really with a portacot. But DD hated sleeping in our friends one for some reason, babies are strange!

Caleb's had no problem with his portacot but we do bring his unwashed bedding so he has familiar smells around him. This sounds bad but what I mean is we wouldn't take clean blankets out of the cupboard, just his duvet/blanket out of his cot. If we go somewhere now we usually stay in his room until he is asleep.

I was going to post yesterday saying how we had no problem with Thomas in a portacot when we go away etc.. We just plonked him in and didnt have any issues.. What about the cot being on the bottom level!?!?! My god the issues we're having with that!! Maybe it's because he's lower down or something? I thought after being in a portacot frequently he'd be fine in his cot on the low level but no!

She may be reacting to the different room, rather than the portacot. I would put a white cotsheet over the side of the portacot so the view is not too different from when she is in the cot. I'd also tuck in a familiar toy (teddy bear etc) near her so she can look at that. Failing all of that, if I was really desperate I'd probably try rocking her to sleep but that can be a 50/50 matter over 1yr.

We had no problems with Jack but then we went away for the first time when he was 2-3mths old and has been sleeping in a portacot at the bach on and off since then. The first few times I just took the sheets off his bed so they smelt familiar (as Jaz said) but I don't bother anymore.
Mum has Jack on Fridays and he sleeps in a portacot at at hers as well as one at Bro and SILs if we go there. I just suppose he is used to it.
