Topic: Trying not to worry... Posted: 28 July 2008 at 5:11pm |
I received a random phone call from my midwife on Friday, she had just learned that something with Drews Guthries test came back as not quite right and wants to retest him tomorrow Now he is almost 6 months, and she did say that if he had the condition he would be very sick, and he is a big healthy bonny boy, so common sense tells me it was probably not done right in the first place, but Im still worried! Im also annoyed that the retest card she was sent never arrived! and we are just finding out about it now

OMG, that is so bad. He's nearly 6 months and they're only just realising this now!! That's why I hate the way they do the tests saying "if anything turns up, we'll let you know".
Drew is such a happy and healthy looking baby I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. I just hope they can get the results back to you fast this time around.
I hope they're going to follow up on how this happened.
Hugs and fingers crossed everything is ok.

I heard that this kinda thing happens a lot and most of the time it is the midwife not getting enough blood and stuff like that - i.e a problem with administering the test, rather than there being an issue with the results. Hopefully this is the case.

thanks Freesia! yeah I agree not very good follow up!!!
Thats what I am hoping Lizzle! The MW did suggest maybe that could have been the problem but she cant say until the test has been repeated.

Is that the heel prick test? Jack ended up having 3 as something went wrong each time. As you said it was likely a problem with taking the test and your mw just wants to be 100% sure, it will all be fine I am sure

Ella had to have 2 of those tests too as they didn't get enough blood the first time.
6 months is a very long time for them to take to get back to you though!
I'm sure it will come back fine though, as you say, he looks like a very happy, healthy, little guy. Still not nice for you until you know eh? Its impossible for mums not to worry!

Frick thats bad! They should have told you months and months ago if something wasnt right! Im sure its all fine though if Drew is healthy and happy.
The same kind of thing happened with us, before I left middlemore caden had to have blood tests cos he had a spiked temp etc, they said his tests were fine and we could go home. Turns out something wasnt quite right and we only knew this cos my midwife got a urine sample fromc aden and it was abnormal and she called the middlemore pead and was told him bloods were abnormal aswell!
He just had more tests done and they were all totally normal and he isnt sick or anything.

Well the test is done, poor little monkey needed 2 heel pricks to get all the blood needed and wasnt very impressed, not that I blame him! Apparently his test came back with elevated levels for galactosaemia, which of course I had to google lol!!
Making the Diagnosis Someone with galactosaemia is unable to break down and use galactose. The main dietary source of galactose is lactose which is found in milks. This is why the baby becomes unwell, usually in the first week, having appeared completely normal at birth. Galactose and galactose-1-phosphate levels rise in the baby’s blood and he/she becomes ill.
Signs of liver disease including jaundice, lethargy, poor feeding and weight loss are very common. The severity of the liver disease varies a lot. Babies can also be prone to infection at this stage, although this does not continue to be a problem. Cataracts may also be present. These symptoms are not just seen in galactosaemia and the paediatrician looking after your baby will do a range of tests to make the diagnosis.
So he certainly hasnt had any weight loss or feeding issues the little buddha! MW wil give me a phone as soon as she hears back.
