Topic: BFP - what do I do now - Help please! Posted: 29 August 2007 at 5:39pm |
Hi,
Im quite new to NZ from England. I have found out this week that I am pregnant with baby number 2 which is great.
Not so sure of the process over here so - Do you go to the Dr's to have your pregnancy confirmed over here so that you get registered for scans, blood tests etc like in the UK or is the process different over here? I see I have to register with an independent midwife at some point - is this right? Not sure what to do here in NZ so any advise would be great.

Congratulations!
Welcome to Ohbaby! I think it is quite similar over here to the UK, once you get your BFP you make an appointment with a doctor to confirm and then once you've done that you find yourself an independent midwife. You start your antenatal appointments with them roughly around the beginning of your second trimester. Whereabouts do you live in NZ? There is sure to be someone near you that can advise on good midwifes in your area.

I never went to the Dr to confirm my BFP, I rang the local maternity home and got a list of indipenant Midwives and rang a few of them till i made my chioce. she came round a couple of days later and sent me for bloods and started the relationship rolling.

Congrats!
For me, going to the Dr to confirm was a waste of time and $$ - she only told me to get a midwife asap, and did a preg test using the same supermarket kit as I had already used (3 times!).
Someone on this website from Nelson will likely be able to advise on a good mw there.
All the best

Congrats on your BFP! Oh, and welcome to OhBaby! Well, I'm from Nelson (well Motueka actually, but close enough). First, I would see your doctor (if you have one - if not, register with one in your area). Technically, your doctor provides all your antenatal care until you are 14 weeks pregnant, but it pays to get onto midwives fairly early as they can be in demand (although Nelson isn't too bad), and they will see you earlier than the 14 weeks (or at least book you in).
In Nelson, the yellow pages is the best place to start, as certain midwives cover certain areas. I would recommend the independent midwives of the nelson region (its in a box in the yellow pages under "midwives". For more info on each midwife, your local pharmacy should carry a pamphlet that has a more detailed description of each midwife and their philosophy.
I went to Leah Saussey (didn't start seeing her until 28 weeks as I had transferred from CHCH) and my SIL is seeing Andrea Vincent. If you want some more info about either of those midwives, just PM me.
Good luck with it all!

i don't think i can really add to what the other ladies have said but i just wanted to say welcome and congratulations on your pregnancy.
there's another thread i started about nelson mum's maybe meeting up sometime soon, it might be a good way to get to know some more mums in nelson and maybe they can tell you which midwife they used and stuff.

in nelson you can also go through the hospital midwife team the KYOM (know your own midwife) which is what i did for my first 2 births, then my midwife went independent so i went to her rather than the hospital for my last.
if you want to go with a hospital midwife (which work similair to the independent at the end of the day, just ring the maternity ward or visit it and put your name down- i think they assign you to a midwife according to your due date? im not exactly sure how it works these days, but they are all lovely, and work in teams of two and you meet your midwife and their backup. gosh i hope im not confusing you!, they like you to meet their backups in case they are away when you labour, but mine have always wanted to be there for the births so have been there, not the backup.
i have heard great comments about so many of the independents too, so im sure whatever way you go and whoever you choose will be great. it is a good idea if you do want to go independent to get the infomation on them there is a website you can get info sent to you from too... and find a midwife in your area or that caters for the kind of birth you want (ie: home, water, hospital) i really like ruth which is why i am going for her again,
um- just trying to think of the website...
