Oh, and welcome to OhBaby! Well, I'm from Nelson (well Motueka actually, but close enough). First, I would see your doctor (if you have one - if not, register with one in your area). Technically, your doctor provides all your antenatal care until you are 14 weeks pregnant, but it pays to get onto midwives fairly early as they can be in demand (although Nelson isn't too bad), and they will see you earlier than the 14 weeks (or at least book you in).

In Nelson, the yellow pages is the best place to start, as certain midwives cover certain areas. I would recommend the independent midwives of the nelson region (its in a box in the yellow pages under "midwives". For more info on each midwife, your local pharmacy should carry a pamphlet that has a more detailed description of each midwife and their philosophy.

I went to Leah Saussey (didn't start seeing her until 28 weeks as I had transferred from CHCH) and my SIL is seeing Andrea Vincent. If you want some more info about either of those midwives, just PM me.

Good luck with it all!

I think it is quite similar over here to the UK, once you get your BFP you make an appointment with a doctor to confirm and then once you've done that you find yourself an independent midwife. You start your antenatal appointments with them roughly around the beginning of your second trimester. Whereabouts do you live in NZ? There is sure to be someone near you that can advise on good midwifes in your area.
