QuoteReplyTopic: Epilepsy & planning for # 2 Posted: 07 March 2007 at 8:29pm
Hi. 7 mths ago I started having seizures and apparently I have epilepsy. I am on an anti epileptic drug and am wanting to start ttc in about 3 mths.
I am wondering if anyone else has epilepsy and has had a baby while on their AED's. I am concerned about havinga baby while on medication but I believe it's the best option for me.
I know it would a lot harder this time around but I'm sure I could get through it with some extra help.
I'd love to hear from anyone else who has been in the same or similiar situation as me.
Hi Kirsten thank you so much for your reply. I was just hoping to come across someone else that had been in a similiar situation to me as I dont know many ppl with epilepsy, only males.
I am taking Tegretol and so far it seems to be helping as I haven't had any more seizures since starting it.
I have read that Tegretol is one of the safer drugs to be on while pregnant as its been around for so long so there's been alot of testing on it.
I have just started taking Folic Acid (although I'm unsure of exactly how much I should be taking) and a pregnancy multi vitamin.
I'm waiting for an appt with my specialist to discuss all my options with him.
Willie's ex-partner (mum to two of his older kids) has very severe epilepsy to the point where she is brain damaged as a result of continuous oxygen deprivation during some of her more serious seizures.
I don't know the names of the medications she is/was on (but there are several) but I do know that she continued taking them during her pregnancies as it was safer for her to do so than not.
Her first child (my DSS) was born 6 weeks premature by emergency c-sect. They don't think the prematurity was caused by the epilepsy and/or medications, but she fitted really badly during labor hence the need for a c-sect.
Her second child (my DSD) was born naturally a few days early. They decided to let her labour progress and see how she coped and she had a very quick labour and delivery with no complications.
Don't know if this helps at all as I don't know what exacts meds she's on, but thought you might find it interesting.

Thanks for that link Kirsten. I've actually joined that site as they have heaps of really good information but I had never come across that on Tegretol.
I'll go have a good read :)
1 question, I'm getting really confused on how much Folic Acid to take, of course I'll ask my neauro when I see him but that won't be for about 3 weeks.
I've been told 4 mg and also 800mcg, which is only 0.8 mg. The pills I have are 0.8mg so does that mean I should be taking about 5 of them???
