Topic: Which Baby Carrier? Posted: 14 June 2010 at 2:50pm |
I currently have a Moby and find it pretty good. However, if I am popping my boy in and out of the wrap (while going from shop to shop for eg) I find I have to re-wrap so it is tight enough which is a real PITA. I would like to get something for back-carrying later on and something I can breastfeed in too.
Oh, and I am a size 8 so obviously need something that will fit me well, which is another reason for not being too happy with the Moby as there is just far too much fabric and I have to wrap it around my waist a couple of times.
Thanks in advance

i really like our manduca. I find it quick to get kiara on my back, been doing it for about a month now with kiara. I always use it for the supermarket and often she sleeps.
I am not as small as you (size12) but the manduca goes a lot smaller than my size, i am no where near the smallest size adjustment.
I hired it for 2weeks cost $17 ($5 a week plus $7 postage) and then if when you decide you either pay postage back to them or they take the $17 off the price of buying one - does that make sense? I can't remember who i got it from but will go back through emails and find out if you like?

I have an Elite Cruiser carrier, I find it really great although dd doesn't like facing me anymore so she faces outwards so she can see!
It doesn't do back carrying, but I am a size 8 (and only 5'2) so I find it great! Although DP (140kg) and 6'2 doesn't fit it round the waist...
TBH the Moby I borrowed, I could never get it tight enough!

Right, so after a bit of research it seems to be between the Patapum, Manduca and Kozy Carrier Mei Tei.
I think I'm leaning toward the Manduca

I have borrowed a carrier that is an american brand, but is very simliar to a ergo/patapum/manduca, and Im finding it awesome! It can be used for back carry/ side carry and front - facing in only.
I like my wrap cos Aiden can face out, which he cant do in those other carriers, but I find him way to heavy in the wrap now, and the other carrier offers so much more support to my back!
ETA- definatly try to find out how small the carrier can be adjusted cos the one I have borrowed ends up having soooo much extra straps hanging down cos I have it pulled in heaps - Im 5ft3, size 8-10

Jungle mama was the people i bought it off. They were very helpful, there is a bit of nack to undoing the buckle (safety thing) and i emailed her as i couldn't do it and she emailed back in less that 10minutes with exact instructions. Was very impressed.
I also use a wrap but my girl got too long and i couldn't carry her on my front anymore without her legs bumping my knees, im not very tall.
I can also easily carry my 22month old on my back in the manduca. He weighs 14kgs (or there abouts). I have a bad back too and find it great.
When henry was younger i had a expensive baby borjn front pack - once he was 2months old i couldn't carry him anymore and had to see a oesteopath for my neck.
i have worn the manduca to one of my oesteopath appointments and got her to confirm that it wouldn't do any damage to my back and she said it was great!
Anyway i highly recommend the manduca.

I second the Manduca, I have one and love it!!! Although I'm a 14 so I don't need the straps to be as short lol. They do have ways to hook the straps up out of the way if they are too long. DS loves it too, and he's about 12-13kg.

I LOVE my Manduca and wish I had bought it sooner. As Ben was older when I got it I have only been back carrying. It is easy for me to use (short size 10) and easy to adjust the few timesDH has work it (probably just shy of 2m tall!) so it fits a variety of shapes and sizes

Take a look at the bellybeyond website .. Louisa is a tiny size 8 and she wears an Ergo. There are loads of pics of her carrying her kids and it looks like it fits her like a dream.
I have an ergo too .. and its fit me perfectly at every size (I was a big size 18 when Elias was born and Im now an 8).

I vote Patapum I am not a size 8 but tte straps are super adjustable and have elastic so can be tidied away. It also is tested up to 27kg.
'
I have tried a Manduca and like them too but alas thye weren't within my budget
I am pretty sure you can feed in most SSC you just slacken off the shoulders.

I vote Kozy! We have a Moby, a Kozy and an Ergo. I love the Kozy most. I find it's the easiest to put on and the most comfortable to wear. I am a size 6-8 and I wear it for hours at a time (and DS is just over 10kg)
DP prefers the Ergo but it may just be that it looks a bit "manlier". I also think it's easier for him to hip-scoot DS around to his back because he has more space to work with because he is way taller than me. I love the Kozy because you don't have to hip scoot - just hook it tightly under the arms and gently swing around to back. It's awesome - did I mention I love it?
ETA - Although - DP does use the Kozy every now and again. He also finds it very easy to use.

Ohh, great to hear that about the Kozy. I have bought one but with bubs not here yet, it has only be trialled with a teddy!
I was very impressed with how sturdy it feels, and that it can be worn inside out in plain black if DH doesn't feel like having the coloured pattern on the outside. (I did pick one that wasn't too girly)

Im tossing up between the beco and manduca. Have tried the Manduca and it was very comftable and fit me (im a size 6) but i would reccomend seeing if you can try before you buy.
Tweedle also do hireage of the Becos to try.
I think I will go witha Manduca but that is more because most people I know with SSC's have them.

I am thinking I'll probably go with the Manduca. I have emailed a couple of stockists to check the sizing just to be doubly sure, but I'm still waiting to hear back (2 days later ).
In the end it is a toss up between that and the ergo. I'm heading to the Parent & Child show this weekend too so will wait till after that JIC they have something there to try or any specials.

A bit cross as I wrote a great post and then lost it!
Anyway, the jist of it was that the Kozy carrier was my first love - I have one for the car, one for the house, and one spare JIC one needs to go in the wash
That said, I rave about the Manduca too - so easy and quick to use, especially for back carries!
I actually sold my Moby wrap and my Ergo to pay for a Manduca, I found it more adaptable / adjustable.
I can also vouch that it fits all sizes, we have so many differently shaped women come to us at Slingbabies and the Manduca's are our most popular choice of hire from the sling library at the moment (we are Auckland based), and there have been no issues for either small / slim / tall / curvy women.

My Manduca arrived today. I love it, so simple to use. I had DS on my back for over an hour happy as larry and had no trouble getting there on my own.
I wouldn't want to be any smaller though as the straps are all pulled as tight as they will go, but, it should fit better as DS gets bigger. I can't wait to use it more

Lil Nic, the Manduca is a soft structured carrier, like an Ergo or Beco.
