Topic: Last nap of the day? Posted: 01 April 2010 at 4:38pm |
For the last week we've finally got a handle on day sleeps (touch wood), but the last sleep (around 3pm-5pm) before his cluster feeding period I just can't seem to sort. I've been trying for the last hour to get him down, I've tried rocking, cuddling, feeding, shusshing, singing (I'm not suprised the singing didn't work though ) and nothing, he's upset as he's now overtired but nothing seems to work. I even resorted to going for a drive with him yesterday, but as soon as I stopped the car he was wide awake again.
Its been the same the last 3 or 4 days. Every other sleep I feed him and rock him for a little while then put him into bed with his aquarium thingy going and he's out to it within 5mins.
Any suggestions??

It's always the hardest nap for us here too. By the end of the day they are so tired and grumpy (even after they've been sleeping all day! Well, in most cases, in my case she's awake most of the day )
Does he like the pram? I'll sometimes go for a walk once she's showing tired signs. She doesn't often fall asleep in the pram, but once I get back she's sometimes relaxed enough to go to sleep.
Otherwise if she REALLY refuses sleep I just shift bedtime forward a bit and get her fed and into bed. I try to avoid that though because then she's awake early It's a tough one, it's why they call it the 'witching hours'.

I also take DS for a walk at that time as otherwise he will cry for the whole time he is meant to be sleeping. Have you tried bathing him before that sleep?

Aiden only has one big sleep which is usally 2 hrs around lunch time, and has a shorter nap after being awake about an hr in the morning. In the afternoon he just catnaps. Around 4pm its hard to get him down but he always settles when I put him in the wrap and wear him - he has a better sleep like that than if i keep trying to get him to go to bed like he does fine the rest of the day. Then we bath him about 5.45pm and he goes to bed by about 7pm. Well thats roughly how our days go at the moment!

It was always the hardest nap for my DS as well. We got into a habit that if DS was not asleep by the time DH got home, he'd end up being bounced to sleep by DH.
Good luck

Daniel only ever has his late day sleep (usually 4:30-5pm) either on the car or pram. I just go with it & make sure I'm driving back from being out or go for a nice walk at that time each day.

Clodagh's dropped this late sleep So she does 9ish- 1030ish and 2ish- 3ish then that's it till bedtime 6.30/7. If she does ever grab a nap after 4 then her bedtime gets signficiantly later which is why I don't pursue it lol
But yeah when she was having this late nap I'd often go for a walk so she'd sleep in the pram. You could also wear her in a wrap which some bubbas like.

DS has a 'witching hour' aswell however his is 5-7pm - he will fall asleep in his cot perhaps once or twice a week for that nap - the rest of the time he just refuses and seems to have a build up of wind. The only thing we find works is a ride in the pram or rock him off to sleep in the bouncinette (we keep him wrapped otherwise he wakes himself up still). He used to never sleep in his cot at that time, so 1-2 nights a week is an improvement for us and will hopefully improve further soon!
Good luck

Yip that sleep is the hardest and sometimes you just have to go with the flow...Georgiana often just refuses to have that sleep which is really hard cause its that part of the day when "WE" need a rest too. My saviour for that has been a battery operated swing I got from Farmer. It has music and a mobile and so long as she is fed and tied she will fall asleep in there if she won't in her bed. As a matter of fact that is exactly what she is doing now!
Good luck cause it is a hard one and you prob don't want to haveto go for a walk every afternoon
