Topic: SOLIDS Posted: 08 March 2010 at 5:44pm |
A question....I started my baby on solids almost 2 weeks ago. I gave her some carrot and courgette tonight which she loved. She ate all I gave which I thought was plenty and she was looking around for more. On occasions like this should I give her more? How do I know how much to give her? She does seem to grizzle when she has had enough. Can I over feed her on solids?
When can I start her on fish and meat?
Thanks for any feed back in advance!

i would be inclined to err on the side of caution and not give her more... just to give her little body a chance to cope with the food... cause dont forget what goes in must come out too!
and the milk is still more important...

I think that they don't need meat or fish for a few more months. We held off until DS was 6 or 7 months as their digestive systems are not fully formed to process meat yet (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Also their iron stores start depleting around 7 months

I would give her another week limiting her intake just to make sure she doesn't get constipated and then go for it. They will stop eating when they are full. Just as long as you offer a milk feed first you should be fine. And yep - meat after 6 months.

Four and a half months is probably still abit young for solids so I would only be giving the soft carrot and courgette at the moment. Do you have the plunket book it has a guide chart inside. I'm pretty sure fish is closer to a year old.

yeah i agree that it is a little early...but if you have chosen solids now make sure you puree everything and freeze a lot of cubes togive her....make it flavoursome...eg we did fruit and veges to start and then graduated to meat stews (the whole plate basically got pureed together - meat potato peas etc...)...and then onto other things...we bought mini containers once we progressed from cubes and froze them - eg do a stew and dish it into many dishes and freeze and same with pastas etc in time
the mesh nets you can buy are good too...Ella was on those at 6 plus months....

I thought the recommendation these days was to wait for 6 months for solids, or am I totally wrong?

Yeah, the current recommendation is to wait till closer to 6mths for solids.
We started at 5.5 mths. I've known mums who stated at 4mths.
A bit of a personal choice I guess. And much like everything else I guess some babies really are ready sooner than others.
Iron stores start to deplete from 6mths (emphasis in start, it's not like one day happy baby, next day anemic baby). It also has to do with a change in breast milk contents which on average happens at 6mths. Progress formula (6mths +) has extra iron.
As for meat, that's from about 6mths. Fish is OK, but not shellfish/crustaceans - they come later.
