Topic: How long to get back to birth weight? Posted: 11 September 2009 at 8:52pm |
I think Ava's taking way too long to get back up to her birth weight. She's really spilling (well, she vomits), has just had a bad cold like the rest of us so halved her feeds, and now doesn't seem interested in milk (she prefers to suck the dummy than the bottle).
At birth she was 3.77kg (8lb5oz)
Discharged (2do) 3.49kg (7lb11ish oz)
1wo 3.5kg
2wo 3.64kg (7lb12.5oz)
I seem to remember Jack only taking a week to get past his birth weight. i know she lost a bit initially, but she just doesn't seem to be gaining well. Midwife isn't overly concerned, but is still checking in to see how feeding is going. She is a 4-hourly feeder (can't cut it down any more or she doesn't drink) and has only met the required amounts (is FF) for a few days in total. Wet and dirty naps are fine, so she's obviously getting something. She's having about 80-90ml a feed now (was only 40-50ml until yesterday while she was sick) and should be having about 100-120ml at least.
Are there any suggestions? Or can you just tell me how long it took your baby to get back to birthweight and beyond if they lost a bit in the first couple of days? Thanks. Not really worried, but it would be nice to see a gain.

my baby lost 13% due to being really spilly. he was eventually put on anti-reflux formula and eventually ranitidine for reflux. keep an eye on reflux symptoms as all his spilling which is why he lost weight. i took 3.5 weeks to reach his birth weight and then he just took off and is now a monster. lol. i know of quite a few ppl on here who's babies dont take the 'recommended amount' and are fine. my monster eats more than the amount and he is on the 50% line for weight so some kids just eat more or less. GL for getting it sorted out though

Spencer lost well over 10% in the first week, not sure the exact amount just that when I got transferred from CWH to the birthing unit on day 4 they ticked the box that said greater than 10% (awesome how much they actually tell you!). I think he was nearly 6 weeks old before he got back to birth weight, he was extremely spilly and would projectile vomit out of his nose. Midwife told us it was normal, turns out he was allergic to dairy So yeah, just something to think about/ask about.
Kyle was heavier than his birth weight by day 6, so they are all different, I was still eating dairy as well even though he is also allergic to it, just doesn't seem to be as bad as Spencer was.
There is a strong link between reflux and cows milk protein allergy (80% but can't remember which way round, either 80% with reflux have allergy or 80% with allergy have reflux)

Joel was back over his birth weight at 1 week, Leah took about 5 weeks! So long as she is gaining don't worry about how fast. (and I know how hard it is not to worry about it seeing as I had to weigh her every 2 weeks to start with and then every month till she was 1) Oh and both mine were spilly till around 8 months.

Cool thanks for that. Midwife check on Monday so fingers crossed for a weight gain. Hopefully my little minx will actually start drinking again, she was going so well and then all of a sudden reverted back to being spilly and not drinking much. Hope it's not reflux Mum's just started stocking us up on formula as Ava has been fine on it so it would be a real pain to change lol

Elias was super spilly as a nb I was constantly changing his bed and gown in hospital as he would bring up all his food! (getting better, but still does spill after each feed).
He was above his birth weight on day seven.
I dont know how much he drinks though as he is bf but he feed three-four hourly from six/seven till six/seven then a night feed at two/three am (which is ebm of 150 mls)

Yep we go through a change of bedding (well nappies lining the bed lol) and clothes every feed here, usually for both Ava and I. Needless to say my carpet has seen better days so Mr Rug Doctor will be coming for a visit in summer!
She's had 2 feeds of 100ml today which is a massive improvement - I changed to #2 teats (Avent) and it has made it a little better. She must be a lazy feeder now after being sick I think

Travis took two weeks to get to his birth weight, there are things to fator in two if you are BF and lost a lot of blood, like I did then your body is trying to make more blood and make milk at the same time, while having hardly any sleep.

Morgan took just over two weeks, and she was a big gutsy bub who hardly lost any weight, so I wouldn't worry! She was also a 4 hourly + feeder (unfortunately that has changed!!) who did 6 hours plus overnight right from the start, so got less milk in a day than most. She was still gaining though, just not rapidly. I know so many bubs that have taken two weeks or longer. And so many bubs who drink more or less than "required" .... but as long as they're happy and gaining they should be fine!

Well she's finally made it (well 10g out lol) She's turned a corner with feeding in the last couple of days and her cold is all but gone. Put on half a pound this last week which is awesome. Now if she could stop vomitting over me all day I'd be even happier

You could try thickening the formula with food thickner so you can still use your stock pile - Nutricia make one you can get from the pharmacy. Gabrielle was/is really spilly and was diagnosed with reflux at 13 weeks. I'm not sure if you are supposed to talk to your doc or MW about food thickner before you use it but I find it definately helps keep the majority of Gabrielle's feed in her stomach as she was still a major spiller even on reflux meds.
And yay for the weight gain too!
