Arrived 3 weeks early and threw was what already chaos into mayhem! :)
He's a cute little fella but I have some questions (I have about 25 million questions) and was after a little help from some more experienced people.
1) Alex either is screaming or is completely calm. There isn't any middle ground. He doesn't like being in the open and I understand why, and is happiest when he is tightly swaddled.
2) He does this thing that was queried by the midwives where he "shudders" from time to time, almost like a shiver but more prolonged ( A few seconds). It's hard to explain but I think it only happens when he is sleeping. It's not like the jerking of rem sleep. Anyone seen this before ? Ped's looked him over and say as far as they can tell it's ok. I'd feel better if everyone I asked didn't look blankly. Sometimes he will do the shudder from a the top/bottom separately a few seconds apart.
He is eating (bit of a hard time getting him started but usually he is ok after that) is sleeping fine, and is happy enough except times you would expect him not to be, like when he is hungry/wet etc.. Nipple shields for the WIN!
Thanks for any advice!

Firstly congrats on your little boy!
As for the shuddering thing when I was little I had epelisy and I would shudder like that when I was asleep but the peds have checked him over so I"m sure its not that. So no real help but welcome to motherhood where you always seem to have more questions than answers yet your baby grows healthy all the same.

Umm... that will teach me for making an assumption. Sorry. Though I think the statement works just as well if you put fatherhood in instead of motherhood.

Congratulations!
No idea on the shuddering either, but in answer to your first question- babies tend to go from zero to screaming in 0.1 secs! I dont know about this 'middle ground' you are looking for, but at this age, from what I know- they only have off and on!
Sounds like a sling or wrap might be a uselful investment too!
Good luck!

Hi There!
Thanks, nice to know he is normal :) It was something queried by the widwifes so that was why I thought I would seek a different opinion, but so long as it's normal I'm a happy daddy.

Ekk, Im not expert- if the midwives queried it, maybe its not normal then. Will be interesting to see what others think.

I think the nipple shields for the win is why I assumed you were mummy, lol.
I dont know about the shuddering, but I know plenty of newborns who went for 0 to 100 in the screaming front.
This is going to sound really stupid, but is he cold??? My little man had a lot of trouble with retaining heat in the first week and he ended up being swaddled in 2 wraps with wool botties and beanie on and then a big thick wool blanket doubled over on top. Im sure the mw would have checked that though.... so yeah stupid question.
Congrats on your early arrival!

congrats and welcome! I dont know about the shuddering thing but my 6 month old still does a shiver thing with his bottom lip even when I know he isnt cold. Babies are weird!!!
As from no middle ground....wait till he gets older and starts giggling. Then you will find the giggle that suddenly out of the blue becomes screaming!!! A ltitle warning would be nice...but no!

Ya know what I found interesting. When I was a kid all I wanted was a family. When I got my first serious job and then became self employeed and started dealing with CEO's etc, kids became far from what I wanted, but my wife is one of these people you meet who was put on this earth to have babies and she was insistent. For the last 8 months I have been quite anxious because I am squeamish and don't cope that well with no sleep or sudden or high pitched noises. Well 10 minutes after Alex was born all my anxiety was gone, I'm pushing the midwives away so I can change him, I want to soothe him when he cries and I can't wait to be a Dad!
The only plus side to my wife having her emergency (Retained placenta and lost half her blood volume) surgery immediately after the birth, was that *I* got to do the first skin to skin hour with him immediately after the birth, which she normally would have done! There was still about 10-15 minutes between birth and me getting him, but hopefully it was what he needed!

You are a Dad already Keep up with the skin to skin, the coolest thing for a Mum to see is a soundly sleeping bub on Daddy's chest.
Cooper does this shaking thing but we have since discovered he's do it any time he's excited. So kinda the opposite of your boys.
But I'm with the post on check his temperature.

not sure about the shuddering thing, but if the docs checked him and aren't overly concerned , id say thats a good sign .
A lot of babies like being wrapped, I think it reminds them of the security they felt in the womb .
Enjoy being a dad , being a parent is the most rewarding thing you will ever do

Jody shudders when she poops.
Your wife sounds lovely, make sure you give her lots of attention too, I got really jealous of my DH loving our baby, it's all the hormones, makes you a little crazy
And yeah, crying is the only form of communication your little man has, he's just telling you he wants food/cuddles/warmth/cooling/new nappy/to be sung to/rocked/burped etc etc etc.
CONGRAULATIONS
