When I was a kid all I wanted was a family. When I got my first serious job and then became self employeed and started dealing with CEO's etc, kids became far from what I wanted, but my wife is one of these people you meet who was put on this earth to have babies and she was insistent. For the last 8 months I have been quite anxious because I am squeamish and don't cope that well with no sleep or sudden or high pitched noises. Well 10 minutes after Alex was born all my anxiety was gone, I'm pushing the midwives away so I can change him, I want to soothe him when he cries and I can't wait to be a Dad!

The only plus side to my wife having her emergency (Retained placenta and lost half her blood volume) surgery immediately after the birth, was that *I* got to do the first skin to skin hour with him immediately after the birth, which she normally would have done! There was still about 10-15 minutes between birth and me getting him, but hopefully it was what he needed!

My little man had a lot of trouble with retaining heat in the first week and he ended up being swaddled in 2 wraps with wool botties and beanie on and then a big thick wool blanket doubled over on top. Im sure the mw would have checked that though.... so yeah stupid question.

Congrats on your early arrival!

There isn't any middle ground. He doesn't like being in the open and I understand why, and is happiest when he is tightly swaddled.

2) He does this thing that was queried by the midwives where he "shudders" from time to time, almost like a shiver but more prolonged ( A few seconds). It's hard to explain but I think it only happens when he is sleeping. It's not like the jerking of rem sleep. Anyone seen this before ? Ped's looked him over and say as far as they can tell it's ok. I'd feel better if everyone I asked didn't look blankly. Sometimes he will do the shudder from a the top/bottom separately a few seconds apart.

He is eating (bit of a hard time getting him started but usually he is ok after that) is sleeping fine, and is happy enough except times you would expect him not to be, like when he is hungry/wet etc.. Nipple shields for the WIN!

Thanks for any advice!
