We are successfully going along with solids at the moment. On to 3 meals a day now and everything seems to go down well.

What comes next and when? When do you introduce finger foods? Do they need teeth for them? How about vegemite....when does that come into the diet?

We started finger foods at about 6.5months (I think). Good things to start with are cooked fruits and I also found rice crakers great as they are easy for them to hold and they just go soggy. Spencer did have teeth by then but I don't think they are necessary as they mostly seem to suck on finger food anyway.
A fresh food feeder is good if you baby is in to them, Spencer doesn't like his very much but will use it for ice cubes and water melon.
Hadn't even thought about vegemite, neither me nor DH eat it.

I've put vegemite on my finger and let him suck it. He pulls fantastic faces! Just wondering about the salt content. When do you not have to worry about that? If you give them some of your food, do we have to stop adding salt to our cooking (DH would go nuts if that was the case)

I read no salt added to anything until 12 months but that is kind of impossible once you introduce finger foods. I just try to get low salt everything, so signature range do rice crackers that have only small amount of salt and organic rice cakes are good. Things like cruskits/arrowroot biscuits Spencer can't have so haven't looked into those. I don't add salt to cooking anyway but if I did then I would stop once giving to bubs. Could your DH not sprinkle a bit on his dinner if he needs it that much?
If vegemite is high in salt perhaps you can make it a once a week treat for the time being.

He definitely doesn't need teeth for finger foods, we introduced them just before 6 months and Daniel is only just getting his first tooth.

We just gave him a rusk to start with and then added a little bit of vegemite on it and then added more. Now that he's use to the taste he can't get enough of it.

cool. And do you need to worry about choking? I mean you always worry but I've been using the fresh food feeder and worry that when we move on to real finger food he will break bits off and choke but I also realise that sometime you gotta get used to swallowing bits of food.

Daniel in the beginning would sometimes gag every now and then. I just kept an eye on him and made sure he stayed upright. When he would gag if he didn't sort himself out pretty quickly I'd just pat his back. I've never had to do more than that. But he got use to it pretty quickly.

We have had one choking incident which was yesterday on an organic rice cracker, I should have checked it first cos they are very crunchy not like the normal ones and it broke up instead of going soggy.
If you start with mushy things first you should be fine, so cooked carrot sticks, bit of cooked apple etc. The first few times that spencer had stuff he chewed it into pieces and spat the pieces out. Melon is great and cucumber cos they are lovely and soft already. Spencer is now able to demolish piece of raw apple and pear as he has got use to it. I just make sure that I supervise him eating any finger food just in case.

Bits of bread/toast, crackers, I just started with anything dry that baby could hold. You'll always need to be nearby to watch/listen for choking, they have a lot of learning to do but are usually pretty good.
