Is it weird that dh and I are starting to look at nursery gear? I mean, i want to have a bed in the nursery, plus DH's sister has offered her cot from her last child (brand new, they have 5 kids before him )
and I saw the most wonderful chair that looked really comfy and good for feeding in etc etc.
We're not pg yet, not even actively trying, but i want to buy things that could come in handy as I see them while we have the money..

I feel its a bit weird.. I guess im just looking for a bit of reassurance that im not going nutty...

Daniel was unexpected so I can't say I've done that. But you could always put away the money while you have it into a seperate account so when you are preggers you can really go nuts

Well thats kinda what i want to do, just start very slowly accumulating things. Im terrible at saving money and I know that when we drop to one income things will be tough, so i want to make sure we are ready!

THe things i wont need to buy: cot, change table maybe a pushchair...
but the rest, well i just wanna slowly build up the items...
Im glad that im not going nutty..

We bought a few things before we were pregnant...the only down side to consider is will you be ok seeing that stuff if takes you a while to fall pregnant or will it be a horrible reminder?

We only bought little things that could be packed away out of sight, we didn't buy anything big until we were pregnant.

Nah your not nutty-just normal.

part of me so wants to do that and buy all those things, but then i have this deep down thing of dont count your chickens before you hatch and if for some reason i cant get pg-then i have to look at the cot and then give it away and dont think i can handle that.
so for now i shall just save the money.

i havent bought anything, only becuase i had an inkling it would take us a long time to get hapu and i was worried that seeing the stuff lying around would have been a reminder of, what i feel, is my failure.
but thats ME

i wish we could buy stuff so bad!

i reckon its pretty personal and up to you guys as a couple.

You've hit it on the head for me Paws. A friend has a box of baby gear she is giving away and I so want to put my hand up and take it, all in the name of preparation, but then I worry about seeing it if it takes a while, and worse, what if I don't get pg... It's a hard one, especially when my dh is not as fixated on it as me. He's more the, when it happens it happens and we'll cross that bridge then *sigh*

We have bought some things already and have friends and family that are holding onto other things for us. It doesn't really bother me too much seeing it even though we're not even pg yet. I look at and think if it's not our own baby that uses it then it will be a friends or family members who will still be very special to us and I'd be happy to gift it someone.

i hear ya.. Mine was like that about even trying for a baby! He was like: lets just wait and see what happens. Hmm, how about no?

I had to explain to him the reasons behind why we cant just 'let it happen' and he finally understood.

I guess i just dont want to be caught unawares but then, how can i be if i have to plan it so throughly? lol

Well for me I've decided to buy stuff I'll need while preg, mainly clothes. Just off TM and it's not very much so far. This filfulls my need to buy things.

I've decided not to buy baby stuff till I'm preg because I don't want to see it around and it's been 9 months of ttc so I'm glad I haven't. I've done lots of research on cloth nappies and buggies and stuff though and will be giving dear bf a powerpoint presentation on what I suggest we buy the day after I find out I'm preg!!!

Kidding bout presentation.

Yeah, my DH was like that as well- lets see what happens and with time, you will get pg.
Now that i am going to the dr for test's he is changing his tune.
I think it just comes down to personal choice, and if you can handle seeing the items you have bought when things dont go to plan.

We have got a few things but they're all hidden . The biggest thing is a cot because DH's boss sold it to us for a fantastic price and it's really nice. But it's all in bits and covered with a big blanket. I refuse to make up a nursery until I'm very pregnant!
I'm with you Almostthere, it's good to get things when it's a great bargain but just don't go over board, it *could* be years before bubba comes along. And you'll still have 6 months(ish) to go nuts!

We had nursery furniture (cot, change tabel etc) and boxes of clothes sitting in our spare room wardrobe before we even started trying for our baby.

We have purchased a few things, mainly really good deals on gender neutral clothing etc. Just basic stuff like all in ones etc.

DH thinks I'm a bit nutty but I would rather buy things now while our money is free flowing!

I must admit, I did get a little sad when I saw the stuff sitting in our spare room (emotional AF day) and so I put it all in the wardrobe out of site.

I don't think we would go as far as to buy 'big' things like cots etc as we may take years to have a baby and that can't fit in the wardrobe!

DH thinks we are better off to put the money in a seperate account, which I agree with.... but then I see stuff on TM and I can't help it! No self control when it comes to spending!

The only thing i have bought is beatrix potter books-because i loved them as a kid and a book that records babies first's. Those are all nicely in a book in the storeroom-so i dont have to look at them and get all emotional.

the bed, well we need another spare bed soI can justify that.. the chair, ok,maybe not the chair..

Hey almostthere I totally know know where you are coming from. For the 18mths we were ttc I was constantly looking at baby stuff when in town and if DH was with me would just raise his eyebrows and say "NO! and drag me away so we didnt buy anything until we found out that I was pregnant.   Good idea about the bank account tho. It is really hard to resist tho.
