Topic: constipation & anal fissure Posted: 05 March 2010 at 9:56am |
It looks like my poor DD (15 months) possibly has an internal anal fissure from constipation. The doctor has prescribed some coloxyl drops. He did not have a look to see if he could see anything as he did not want to upset her anymore. We are also trying to get a urine sample to check for a UTI.
She has been pointing at her nappy/bottom (at the front though) and telling me its sore and screams when I change her nappy I struggle to wipe there or put any cream on.
Has anyone elses child had something similar and was there anything that you did or used that helped them? I just want to make her comfortable, she is happy otherwise.

DD2 is constantly consterpated at the moment shes on Maxi lax enimas, 17.5ml of lacutulose and coloxyl drops as well as magnesium.
The dr said it could take up to 9mths to come right as because she has been like this since christmas her brain is now not telling her bowel it needs to move until its to late, so by stimulating ut with all the above it should in time shrink her bowel back down and the problem should be fixed. Not nice at all the poor thing sees me coming with the enima and runs away

Oli was terribly constipated when he was little (ie for the first 6mths) we used Lacutlose and although we tried the coloxyl drops, we found the lactulose better. We also used to soak prunes in hot water and give him the juice to drink. As she is old enough would she eat prunes? Its so hard when they scream and are clearly in pain....sorry I dont have any other suggestions, but sending to you both.

OH no poor Heidi!!
I suffer from those myself, and they hurt so bad when you have to go and mine bleed a lot.
I use creams for that area, but Im not sure they are ok for toddlers...

not sure if this will help as it sounds so severe but I never found prunes to work for my little guy - but the pear/kiwifruit puree just cleans him right out. He was on coloxyl, prune juice, plain water and the apple/prune puree and none of those worked much at all. Oh, perhaps that kiwifruit frozen stuff - kiwi crush? that might help??
Sheza - bugger! I didn't realise you had these. I still struggle with mine but have pretty much gotten them heaps better by using this all natural fruit laxative for months on end to give things a chance to knit back together. The stuff is only like $8 from the warehouse and is like this fruit paste stuff - boy did it do the trick! Not sure if that would help or if you have already tried everything.

Kate - It's called Nu-Lax and is a yellow and green box. It's about $7.90 I think, from memory and is this really disturbing paste like stuff that you have to put in another container and you take 1.5tsp per day. But it tastes really yummy - like the inside of a fig bar.
I woke up the next morning absolutely busting LOL - and I continued to take it for about 3 months straight even when I thought things were healed to give everything a chance to knit back together. I still have some dramas but I am now free of the laxative and have almost zero pain. Just a warning to not stop it cold turkery cause TMI - you end up with a log the next day that destroys all your hard work!!

Thanks for all the advice girls. I have been giving her prune juice and some apricots and also some prunes in with her yoghurt. She did go yesterday but it was till hard and today she keeps crying saying "poo poos" and then more crying more but still nothing I so hope it heals soon for her as I know what they are like too as I get them often, its awful! Might have to see if I can get some of that stuff for myself Mollycat.

Oh how horrible for a little person Heidismum, I too suffer from fissures (mine bleed a lot too Sheza) but hardly ever get constipated so have no way of treating them - have just been told by doctors that they aren't 'that bad' and I need to put up with them It is awful and I so hope you can cure your girl's discomfort soon.
On a side note if anyone knows of anything I can use to ease the pain I get with mine (keeping in mind that I don't get constipated or painful piles alongside) I'd love to hear!

babyg - I never got constipated or piles, it was just that tender that a normal movement would tear everything open and bleed all over the place. With the nu-lax everything was (ewwww TMI) liquidy so couldn't tear anything and the tears could start to fuse back together. If you've had them for awhile (took me awhile to figure out what was going on) I can only assume you get a bit of scarring so it takes even longer to heal.
Otherwise - I wonder if there is a numbing gel available. Surely something like that exists so that you could numb the area a few minutes before going?? Might be worth asking your doctor...

Thanks mollycat, I got them really bad (constant) for 6mths after Cs birth and ever since I have had them reoccur from time to time.
Obviously not planning on taking any laxatives while pregnant but thinking ahead to after this bub arrives too.
Doctors weren't prepared to do anything for me before so I can't imagine that has changed and I refuse to spend $40 to hear that.
I think I might discretely ring a pharmacy to ask what they may be aware of which could help.

There is a homeopathic remedy called Wizards Ointment that I use its a cream and I used it during and after pregnancy. My sister was recommended it my her MW for piles and it also works absolute wonders on nappy rash. Have been using it for DD and hoping it gives her some relief.

Just a heads up that the Nu-Lax says not to use while breastfeeding but I discussed with the pharmacist and isn't an issue as long as you keep your liquid intake up. \

Babyg I got an anal fissure right after Andrew's birth. Was only diagnosed at 6 weeks and had a few months of agonising pain, bleeding and right out torture. I was given some cream and some other stuff but it felt like it made it worse. It was great for the associated pain but I felt like it made everything just thinner. Back to the DR and she will just give the same freaking stuff and that happened 3 times.
I did a lot of reading ect and then decided to just get off the stuff and try everything naturally. I wasnt constipated either. But found food too high in fibre can actually make me feel worse. Like apples.
TMI to follow: I found the tip of olive oil in a syringe just before you feel like going squirted in helped things and (you can use vaseline apparently as well) and after 2 weeks it felt like it was healing and I stopped and I got torn again but after that I continued for 6 weeks and it healed and no more problems.
Heidismum I hope your girl feels better real soon.
