Topic: Breastfed babies and water? Posted: 13 January 2010 at 9:31am |
I have read that BF babies don't need water as the foremilk is thirst quenching but am curious as to how often those of you who don't give your babies water BF during the day especially in this hot weather? DS has 5 BF a day and in between water in a sippy cup and he drinks a lot of water so if I was BF'ing him every time he was thirsty I have my boobs out every half an hour!

We don't have hot weather so it's not a problem but I try & remember to give him water during the day as he goes from 7am to 3pm with no feeds

I've just stopped BFing but I was only offering water after his solids - it's still the same now that he's formula fed (plus, we don't have hot weather either).
Just curious - how do you know that he's thirsty? DS always wants a drink of water if he sees us with our Pump bottles but more often than not, the water just comes out his mouth again (I think he likes the feel of the coolness in his mouth).

i always gave isaac a bit of water in a bottle since week 1 or 2. just to get him used to a bottle. I still do 2 BF a day, and 1 FF.
He never drank much water though. and now I give him water after every solids meal in a sipper cup thing, and he drink about 80ml a day of water.
personally, I would rather give him a sip of water than get my boobs out. it's not harming him, and it's getting him used to water for when he's not getting milk so much.

Jake has just dropped to 3-4 bf per day and he gets water after breakfast, morning tea and afternoon tea.
He only drinks about 5ml at a time though so he cant be too thirsty!

I didn't give Morgan (or Jake) water til they went on solids. She has water after / with lunch and dinner and sometimes a little in the afternoon after her BF and before dinner if its really hot. She has 4 milk feeds (3x BF and 1 formula). Jake was the same at this age. He probably didn't get much extra water til 9 months when he was on more solids and only 3 milk feeds, but I still kept it to meal times til about 1, and since then he always has a sippy bottle around.

I feed DD2 (5.5mo) roughly 2-3hrly during the day and this seems to satisfy her, I don't think I'll be offering water anytime soon.

BM is 90% water so is it really necessary to offer? Perhaps once they are on solids to help prevent constipation etc. I dont give Jackson water yet (he refuses to drink from a bottle anyways) and its stupidly hot here. He feeds 2 - 3 hourly so Im happy he is hydrated enough without needing additional water.

I give Oliver (8mths) water with meals. Now it's hot and he is much more mobile l can't see how he wouldn't be thirsty. I drink water with my meals and in the summer drink water more often than 3 hrly.

That's what I was thinking Tibby. Corban would probably drink about 250-300mls of water a day. He can use his sippy cup independently so I just leave it where he can reach it and he helps himself throughout the day and then of course at meal times. I know plunket recommend giving water once you start solids but LLL say a Bf baby shouldn't need water as breastmilk will satisfy their thirst. Don't want to start a debate but was just interested to know how often mothers BF older bubs (6mths plus) if they don't drink water.

DD (9mths) has water after solids, but doesn't drink too much.
I demand feed her throughout the day, so sometimes she may want a quick feed not long after a big one. On an average day she BFs about 6 times, maybe up to 8 times. (some of these are very quick, maybe a minute or two long) and feeds overnight too.
However I don't really feel like I have my boobs out all day, it's what we've always done, so it just feels normal

My son who is 8 1/2 months has just cut down to 3 bf a day. This happened quite quickly from 5/6 a day. He has a feed over night usually around 4-5am.
He doesn't like water so drinks very little if any. I am not to worried about when I offer it. Usually after lunch some time and the sippy cup is just hanging around for him to get used to. He will get water in his mouth but I'm sure it all comes out again.
So in answer to your question, he is only bf 3 times during the day and he has very little water. It is very cold where we live though.

Kyle has had a sippy cup since he went on solids, he always just has it hanging around where he can get it. He likes to drink a lot and it doesn't seem to effect how much milk he requests off me. Kyle will still breastfeed anywhere between 3-7 times a day.
I think we probably just need to have it on offer and let them decide, Spencer was bottle fed but never wanted to drink that much water when everything says they should and Kyle shouldn't need to cos he's on the breast but loves to drink water. There all different.

With McKayla we started giving a sippy cup with water or rooibos tea at dinnertime and then lunch as well and she would take if she wanted. During the day if she was thirsty she would just have boob.
With Andrew he tried to get the cup of water 2 weeks ago so we just give him his sippy cup of water at dinner and lunch as well. Although he loves it in his mouth and then just spit it out.
