I'm very confused about what I need for bub's bedding.

What are the pros/cons to swaddling, safe-T sleeps, sleeping bags? Are you meant to use one or the other (in which case how do you choose?) or a combination? Are there alternatives I haven't thought of?

I'm due in December, so warmth isn't going to be the biggest issue, and I'll probably put baby straight into a cot rather than a bassinet, but beyond that I've no idea.

Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated

We were given a safe-t sleep as a gift when Jack was born but have never even opened it. I didn't like the idea of strapping him down as such, but alot of people love them. Not sure if we will try it with Ben.

We have swaddled both the boys at night, it seemed to help with the startle reflex and distinguish between night and day. Both boys sleep/slept in the hammock during the day and the bassinette at night.

I think some of it is personal preference and the rest is what your baby likes.

With henry i wrapped him for the first month or so at night only. Helped with letting him know it was night and stoped him startling. He was never that attatched to it though so stopped at one month when i couldnt be bothered anymore and because he was sleeping on his tummy i didnt wrap him as i didnt feel it was safe. he didnt mind. I just used muslin wraps as they are real light weight.
With this baby since it will be summer i will just wrap in a muslin and not put any blankets on (unless its a bit chilly then maybe a extra cotton blanket). If i was putting baby straight into a cot i would definately wrap (swaddle) as i think it would make them feel a bit more secure in a large space.
We didnt use a sleeping bag until winter and when he started moving around - in summer we jsut let him but in winter he needed warmth which is where the sleeping bag came in.
I hope that makes sense

We swaddled in either a cotton stretch wrap from the sleep store, or a muslin, Swaddling helps them feel secure and stops the startle reflex. at about 3 months we bought some lightweight sleeping bags which were great especially when we went camping and it got a bit cold, so at least when he kicked of the covers he kept warm.
Now he has a sleeping bag (2.5 tog) which has been great this winter, he doesn't wake at night cold.
We just used a cotton sheet and a wool blanket if he needed it when he was little, cause wrapping them in summer keeps the heat in quite well.
Now he has a duvet over him,
I've never needed a safety sleep, I would probably wait and see if you need one cause they can cost a bit.

I was told by a few peple that if I didn't wrap or swaddle I wouldn't get sleep...but I chose not to as mt MW is very anti it. We haven't had probs with her sleeping (apart from what a newborn would usually do i guess).
The startle reflex is the cutest and funniest thing in the world- I would never stop that
I have the gogo sleeping bags but havem't used them for sleeping yet.
I was originally going to put her in the cot from the start but got a bassinet just before she came and I am so glad we got it as I can have it nxt to my bed and also move it round for during the day.

I swaddled DD till she was 3mths. The times when she wasn't swaddled she'd wake alot earlier than usual - (2hourly instead of 4-5hourly) and she couldn't re-settle without being swaddled.

She is now in a gro-bag (only 1tog) so has sheet, woolen blanket folded over & cot duvet over top.. add another woolie if its a really cold night.
Never used a safety-sleep so can't comment.

If I were you I would wait till your baby is here and decide what you want to do - you could try swaddling (just use muslin, its really cheap) and see if it works. Some babies hate it and don't settle being wrapped, some won't settle without being wrapped - My friends DD is still wrapped at nearly 8mths, she loves it!

Thanks ladies. I hate to think where I'd be without OhBaby! I'll get a swaddling wrap so I have the option to use that if I want to, and see about the other things once bubs is here.
I'm trying to get everything I can sorted pre-baby, cos I live 40 minutes from town, and town tends to be crazy busy pre-christmas, so I don't really want to have to trawl shops when bubs is a newborn.

I dont have a safety sleep for Jake and I am not getting one...

We were not going to use a bassinet but jake came before we had a chance to pick up the cot and got leant a bassinet - couldnt have lived without it! It was on wheels and jake was in whatever room i was in for the first 6 weeks and from then just in our room at night. It was so easy at night as he was right there next to me and I just pulled him into bed for a feed.

I found when wrapping Jake that he hated BEING wrapped, but once wrapped he would settle. He still fights being wrapped now but as soon as the second arm is tucked in his eyes get heavy and he starts drifting off... so cute.

I am thinking about moving him to a sleeping bag soon,.. there are just too many to choose from!

That is good planning re not having to do to much baby shopping in the craze of xmas shopping! I live an hour from any decent baby shops and have found internet shopping to be great. I used the sleepstore and merino kids websites and got everything I needed. I had some wraps but then she go too big for them (don't get to many 1m by 1m as they get to big for them quick) I got online and ordered the big stretchy cotton wraps from the sleep store, then for winter went on to gogo bags. Any way what I am saying is that once bubs is here and no time to go shopping all you need is just a few clicks and a visa card away!!

Buy the biggest wraps you can find, none of these tiny 80cm x 80cm jobbies, you need a minimum 1m x 1m - as well as getting longer use out of them as swaddling wraps, once you stop wrapping you can use them a cot bedding, so a lot better value for money.

we used the miracle blanket(for wrapping) - it was great - didnt start with it till he was around 6 weeks as the neo natal unit didnt agree with them - but once we did it was great! - have a safety sleep but found that i didnt really like it - got it from trade me so didnt pay the full 100 dollars brand new. bassinette is great for rocking etc - as there will be some time that its whats needed.

he was born in december - but it was still quite cold them - got hotter late jan and feb - still wrapped but he only wore a nappy underneath.

we have 1 woollen and one cotton blanket - both a big enough to be double so that you end up with 2 woollen and 2 cotton.

sleeping bag is great now that he is not swaddled - also helps with the cues about sleep time

I swaddled for six months....just didn't know when to swap lol :D
Then she went into a grobag. I find the safe t sleep amazing, for peice of mind and for routine. It can go on any cot, bed, and bassinet, and it's something she associates with sleep...that always helps.
