Just a wee question.

I know when we had DS they reccommended that the capsule go in the middle of the car - so we did that.

Now DS is in the back passengers side.

My question is when the new baby arrives and we have the capsule and the carseat where do I sit them?

I was thinking baby not in middle as DS will be a nightmare with poking it etc. My thought was DS on passengers side as he independently climbs out so safer and baby on drivers side as I can carry baby out?

But then I know that the drivers side is not as safe as passengers so HELP please!

I have Tom on road side and James on foot path side but I have wondered if it would be safer for Tom being on the foot path side. In saying that. I often have to make Tom wait beside me while I put James in so the footpath side for James is better then. but we have a 4WD so Tom cant get in easily by himself....well he can but then he tries to climb through to the drivers seat and we have a tanty cos I wont let him drive.

I should add that the reason James is on foot path side is because I thought it was safer. Then I thought "Does this mean I value his life more than Tom's?" So you cant win. If you have a capsule, it might be easier if you need to put it down etc to be on the passengers side so you can put it down beside the car while you faff around with other things.

I have Elias behind the drivers side (so Issy is in her original postion).

I get out, grab Elias .. then I can go and see to Isabelle.

A couple of reasons.

It means I dont have to "control" Issy while we go to the other side of the car and get Elias.

It also means that Issy isnt getting out on the road side (obviously she is way more mobile than a newborn, and could run into traffic).

It also means I can do a circuit, get out of my door, grab Elias (who is on my side), then walk around to Isabelle.

Also Isabelle is on the "footpath side" so it means I can put Elias somewhere safe while getting Issy out.

Oh and finally, it meant we didnt have to move everything in the car
Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months)

I did it .. 41 kgs gone! From flab to fab in under a year LFs weight blog

Spencer is on the passenger side cos that's where he's always been. We only have two seats in the back of ours so no dilemma over the middle seat.

It depends where we are but I either get Spencer out and he stands next to the car, or I sit him inside the footwell next to Kyle (our doors slide open) whilst I get Kyle out. Or I get Kyle out and then haul Spencer out of his seat, which is not so easy (would be ok if the car was lower and Spencer could get down without my help). If I'm using the buggy then I get Spencer out first as he has a meltdown if he's the one made to wait, even though with our buggy it would actually be easier to put Kyle in first.

I have always had the girls one on each side. I never thought of putting them in the middle. It's weird I would have assumed the middle was more dangerous
Although I guess they have less chance of being crushed by the front seats.....

I thought that too Lisa85 - I think it stems from the lapbelt...
But obviously if they are in a capsule and tether bolted it is safer in the middle as there is less chance they will have side on impact.

The capsule we had was one of the European style ones, I don't think you can fit those with just a lap belt?

glad someone asked this as i have been putting quite a bit of thought into it lately. I thought we would put bubs on the drivers side and henry can stay on the passengers side - for the same reason that most of you are talking about - henry will be mobile therefore would like him by the footpath. However i have yet to determine wether out capsule will fit behind the drivers door so that may cause a problem. hmmmm

That is just where they told me to put mine. It had a base etc but admittedly it only lasted a week as it was a PIA so moved it to passengers side.

Great! Thanks for all the advice ladies. Look like DS is staying on the passengers side and bubs is on the drivers side. Well, if you all did it, it must be fine

I was told that the middle is safest ( no external impact from another car) and passenger side is next as you're more likely to have impact on the drivers side.

But then I have one on either side

When we had a station wagon I would do the circuit like Lilfatty. Now we have a mini bus, I get them both out on the footpath side.
We're working on the 'under arrest' pose

I have heard, although not related to car seats etc, but that when your driving your instincts is to safe yourself therefore you can actually put your passengers in danger. Just a thought about the side of the car thing, as you may find that the drivers side is safer then the passenger side if you lose control of the car

Interesting thoughts. I had been thinking about this as well. In my case though, I think I will have to move DS to the drivers side and put bubz on passengar side as DH is tall and wouldn't be able to fit if baby was on drivers side.

In any other case like you have said it seems to make sense to have older one on passengar side.

we moved Amy over to behind the driver seat as there was no room for DH to drive if the capsule or rear facing car seat was on the driver side.

When Sophie was in the capsule I would get Amy out and do the *hands on the car* thing. If we were getting out and using the push chair then Sophie was out first and then Amy. Now Amy climbs in the passenger door and over to her seat.

We used a LOT of bribery to get her to stand still or climb over (jelly beans, choc raisins, being allowed to press the garage door opener )

the tall dh is our problem too. Im pretty sure the capsule will fit behind the drivers door when im driving (which is most of the time since i have the car during the day) but dont think it will with dh driving. Maybe i will jst have to be the family driver. What are the views on capsule in the front seat???(if there are no airbags) mum was saying to me that thats where they put new babies back when she had us as then you could see bubs.

FYI, when I had my capsule fitted we were told the safest place for a capsule is the middle UNLESS your car has a fold down arm rest in the middle. If this is the case the next safest place is behind the front passengers seat. The handle and canopy thingy should be down to.

Cant really help on the who/where part of the question though..

We will have Jack behind the drivers side and baby on the passengers side, purely because we are both tall and would have to move the drivers seat forward to accommodate the capsule if we put it on the drivers side. When #2 goes forward facing it won't matter.

The reason why the drivers side is the least safe position (other than front seat with an airbag) is because you're more likely to get hit on the drivers side in a T accident - the driver trying to save themselves has little to do with it because the issue is usually another car hitting you, not you hitting another car if that makes sense.

Yeah cuppatea we have a European-style one as well, no way could it go in the middle with a base or anything. I'm sure a carseat would move around in the middle more than on the sides if you had slight bucket seats on either side too? (Like most cars do now).

We have used the capsule in the front seat of DH's car, it wouldn't fit in the rear He has a little honda civic with no front passenger airbag. I actually found it very distracting to drive though as I kept looking at Spencer instead of the road
