Topic: What did you say..? Posted: 08 March 2012 at 7:35pm |
Inspired by another thread - what did you say you'd *never* do when you had kids... and did you?
I have two - the first was that I was never going to let them eat food in the lounge (and thus drop it all over the floor). Um, yea. Come see our carpet, and you can judge for yourself whether we managed.
The second was that I would *never* eat slobbered-on toddler rejects like I've seen so many Mums do. And I never have. So far!

I honestly can't think of anything I was absolutely not doing, except for smacking (which I haven't)... but it was 15 years ago when I had my first so I'm sure there would be some things I changed my mind on... I do remember the reality of parenting being quite different to the expectation

We didn't really have any expectations per say as to what having children would be like, so didn't say we would never do anything, in case we had to eat our words.
However I do remember saying to DP (rather hopefully) before the birth of our first child that women had been going through labour and birth for millions of years so surely it can't be THAT bad, right? LOL. I now tell everyone who asks that evolution could have done a *much* better job of that process.

was going to have drug free birth, used every drug known to man!
always used to roll my eyes when someones child went "off" in the supermarket and swore that I'd always have better control of my kid than that...yeah right
was never going to use formula...
the list goes on and on!

Me too with the dummy... and then I went to ok I'll use it but only for bedtime. Yeah right, I take it EVERYWHERE in public just in case, and in the car... because who can stand sitting in a car with a screaming baby?
I think that might have been it, I can't think of any others at the moment.

I was never going to use a dummy, would be a SAHM till all the kids were at school and never use daycare- have done all those things.
I thought it was gross eating slobbered on food leftovers, and wiping the kids face with spit, and wiping kid boogers on their clothes- guilty of all those things too!

Don't have my kid yet...
But I was never going to be a pregnant lady who only wore jandals. I was still going to wear pretty shoes!
Haha, the only thing I can wedge my gigantic feet into is jandals!

Dummies here too hehe. But also I wasn't going to work, I work part time now. I wasn't going to let the baby in our bed as a newborn, I did that at times when he wouldn't settle. I never specifically planned not to eat slobbered on leftovers and I don't but I have had them shoved in my mouth on occasion by my son hahaha. I was never going to formula feed either, but that didn't quite work how I planned. Nothing ever does. I had to laugh recently when my SIL who has a 3 month old previously said she would never ever use a dummy, then a photo popped up on FB with her child with a dummy. I have learnt to never say never anymore hehe apart from the obvious things like smacking, you never know what you'll do when you're desperate/nothing else works.
Oh I was also never going to do baby led weaning (too messy for me no other reason) but my son from about 8 months refused to eat any other way so Ive had to get over it hehe

I was never going to use a dummy....that didn't last too long.
I wasn't going to use formula....after 5 months of EB I started using formula.
I was never going to use disposable....used them.
I was going to be a SAHM....that really didn't work out as planned.
My child was never going to be the one running through the clothes racks in clothing shops....unless she is strapped in the stroller, she is usually found with me trying to coax her out of the middle of the most expensive delicate stuff in the whole shop.
Whew this list could go on & on

I was never going to co-sleep. Didn't see any reason for it. And here we are with one of my girls in our bed most nights - not that I want it that way but for the sake of us all getting some sleep I'm taking the easy road (for now).
And I was going to be a working mum, was going to go back to work when baby was 6 months. In actual fact I went back when they were 19 months and have already resigned

An first day back at school- if u go into class when the bell rings without making a fuss I will buy u an iceblock after school- totally worked, shes been getting dropped of at the gate since and only needed the one iceblock, lol!

Hehe, I eat pre-chewed toddler foods sometimes
I was pretty open for the most part, although I was definitely going to have my kids sleep sorted out by the time they were weaned. Sigh. I wish.
I'm probably a bit slacker with her diet than I thought I would be, but part of that has been allergies etc restricting what she and I can eat at all.
I was never going to let the kids watch TV, and so far I haven't. My 2 year old has probably watched less than 2 hours in her life and I've no idea who all these characters other parents talk about at playcentre are!
I was going to breast-feed, that was my one non-negotiable and we've done that despite a few hiccups both times

Oh the best laid plans
I was never going to put a child in preschool - DS went to daycare at 5 months.
Never use disposables - don't use cloth now
Never use formula ( had to with both children)
There are so many.
