Topic: Ham! Please? Posted: 22 November 2008 at 8:15am |
I love ham, one of my most favorite things about Christmas is that big huge ham that you slice chunks off around the bone. My family has a big breakfast with croissants, cheese, tomato, pineapple and fresh sliced ham (there is that whole scene where dad tries to cut the ham and we all try to sneak pieces, and mum yells at us and then drops the piece she's hiding behind her back, ahh memories). Then we have cold sliced ham at lunch with the other roast meats and then there is the too full for a real dinner so I have fresh ham on toast and then the same for breakfast and lunch for the next week! Take it to say there is nothing better at christmas then that ham wrapped up in it's moist pillow case in the fridge.
Now, I'm not allowed to have it this year am I, I'll be about 17 weeks by then...

I know exactly how you feel! I was in your shoes last Christmas. I missed my ham even more than a glass of wine Needless to say, I will be partaking in both this Christmas!

I really can't see why. According to the NZ Health & Safety guide all you have to do it heat it til its piping hot. And thats what I have been doing, and it tastes fine.
I hate how the 'standards' have made me so paranoid this pregnancy. I have children which are 8, 14 and 16 and food was not so resticted then. What is the difference between ham then and now? Nothing. My midwife and doctor told me that only a handful of people have had babies affected from from the effects of listerious (sp) so it has to be documented.
It is also a statistic that 2% of ALL babies born will have some sort of malformation....does that stop us from getting pregnant?
Sorry, it just gets so frustating,..,..you cant eat this, you cant eat that! Then I just think back to my previous babies, and they were all healthy and normal.
But the 'risks' scare us into not eating anything!
However, I'll be having my ham...just heated. So yes, they have scared me.
My mother was surprised to see me turn down some food because I was pregnant.....why, she asked. She ate that when pregnant with her kids...
Go figure!

I have to admit that I ate ham after 12 weeks with both pg's. 1st was so sick with morning sickness I just ended up eating whatever I could keep down, and 2nd it was just cos I missed it plain and simple!!
If I bought it from the supermarket, I made sure I went on a busy day when the turn over was gonna be high in the deli and only had it that 1 day. I remember having it cooked on the bone till really hot at some stage during at least 1 pg if not both.
I think the only things I avoided were raw oysters and mussels and soft cheese, but other than that I ate what I wanted when I wanted it! (only avoided the cheese cos i'm not a huge fan, no other reason. I'm not eating it now!)

My mum and MIL have been saying the same things! Cooked ham of the bone thats heated would be fine... especially if you have cooked it yourself so you know it was done properly. I wouldnt be eating it straight off the bone without giving a good nuke first to be honest, especially if its been in the fridge for a few days.
I do think the whole food thing gets a bit crazy tbh. Same as alcohol. A glass of wine every now then is fine, but the whole world judges you if you dare suggest it!
My personal opinion is everything in moderation and if its not fresh and you didnt cook it dont eat it. Which is my non preggy stance of food anyway ('cept at restaurants, then its just a gamble lol).
I will be having my chrissy ham this year, on christmas day and MIL is going to cook it up so its nice and listeria free for bubs. Might even heat some up the next morning for ham on toast!
Highly opinionated ramble over

I agree with that statement, with my DD18, DD17, DD13, DD8 I was eating raw seafood and all the no no foods with them & now it's just my last 2 pregnancies and this one that I've really taken notice of the food rules....
I've been told that the proper heating and storage of cold foods are fine if handled properly...

I think the major problem is that we eat more pre-prepared food now, as compared to 10-15 years ago, and you can't guarantee the food safety of something you haven't made yourself.
I do agree everything in moderation, but as we didn't have a hot ham (and I far prefer cold meat anyway! ), I thought it best to avoid it. It's a hard place to be in though - on the one hand, you do end up overly paranoid because of all the warnings, but then again, how would I have felt if I had contracted listeria and something horrible had happened?

I will be asking my Mum to make the ham for lunch on the day, instead of the day before, so we can have it hot not cold. Then if I want more after that I will just nuke it. (We have Christmas as a family and Mum always makes the ham).
I missed ham last Christmas, so much!!

SO glad to not be having this 'problem'! lol
But I do agree with the everything in moderation thing...I fully intend to have a small glass of bubbly at Christmas.... and I will thoroughly enjoy it!

I didn't eat any but next time I am pregnant I will be nuking it to piping hot...cold definitely a no go for me... I don't go with the it was fine in our day thing because of reasons stated above and because just cause it was ok once doesn't mean it would be again....BUT it's whatever you are personally comfortable with I just didn't want to risk anything at all.

The leftovers will be worse than the initial meal as there's been time for bacteria to develop.
I cooked my ham (vacuum packed boneless stuff) on the BBQ (we were camping) when I was 39 weeks. I did have a wee bit of cold stuff when it was first opened, as all meat is fine if its vacuum packed and consumed straight away.

Looks delicious! Roll on Xmas!
I also ate ham in both of my pregnancies.. Not all the time though, But it was just something i had to have every now n then..
I would have a slice anyway, just heated up or straight from the oven after its been glazed... YUM!

Don't be jealous of my nut loaf Tracey lol I have actually never made a nut loaf but I do vaguely recall eating ham out of pure desperation to stop spewing about 10 years ago with my first pg....um needless to say it didn't work lol

Yep As long as its been refrigerated obviously and you eat it the day you open it! I unfortunately didn't find this out until I was about 38-39 weeks, needless to say hubby and I had ham sammies that day!
