I love ham, one of my most favorite things about Christmas is that big huge ham that you slice chunks off around the bone. My family has a big breakfast with croissants, cheese, tomato, pineapple and fresh sliced ham (there is that whole scene where dad tries to cut the ham and we all try to sneak pieces, and mum yells at us and then drops the piece she's hiding behind her back, ahh memories). Then we have cold sliced ham at lunch with the other roast meats and then there is the too full for a real dinner so I have fresh ham on toast and then the same for breakfast and lunch for the next week! Take it to say there is nothing better at christmas then that ham wrapped up in it's moist pillow case in the fridge.

Now, I'm not allowed to have it this year am I, I'll be about 17 weeks by then...

I know exactly how you feel! I was in your shoes last Christmas. I missed my ham even more than a glass of wine Needless to say, I will be partaking in both this Christmas!

Oh The sacrifices we have to make for our little bundles. But it's all worth it in the end, I know it's not gonna be easy for you this Chrisi but you'll get by.

My mouth is soooooo watering right now, LOL...

I really can't see why. According to the NZ Health & Safety guide all you have to do it heat it til its piping hot. And thats what I have been doing, and it tastes fine.

I hate how the 'standards' have made me so paranoid this pregnancy. I have children which are 8, 14 and 16 and food was not so resticted then. What is the difference between ham then and now? Nothing. My midwife and doctor told me that only a handful of people have had babies affected from from the effects of listerious (sp) so it has to be documented.
It is also a statistic that 2% of ALL babies born will have some sort of malformation....does that stop us from getting pregnant?
Sorry, it just gets so frustating,..,..you cant eat this, you cant eat that! Then I just think back to my previous babies, and they were all healthy and normal.
But the 'risks' scare us into not eating anything!
However, I'll be having my ham...just heated. So yes, they have scared me.
My mother was surprised to see me turn down some food because I was pregnant.....why, she asked. She ate that when pregnant with her kids...
Go figure!

I have to admit that I ate ham after 12 weeks with both pg's. 1st was so sick with morning sickness I just ended up eating whatever I could keep down, and 2nd it was just cos I missed it plain and simple!!

If I bought it from the supermarket, I made sure I went on a busy day when the turn over was gonna be high in the deli and only had it that 1 day. I remember having it cooked on the bone till really hot at some stage during at least 1 pg if not both.

I think the only things I avoided were raw oysters and mussels and soft cheese, but other than that I ate what I wanted when I wanted it! (only avoided the cheese cos i'm not a huge fan, no other reason. I'm not eating it now!)

My mum and MIL have been saying the same things! Cooked ham of the bone thats heated would be fine... especially if you have cooked it yourself so you know it was done properly. I wouldnt be eating it straight off the bone without giving a good nuke first to be honest, especially if its been in the fridge for a few days.

I do think the whole food thing gets a bit crazy tbh. Same as alcohol. A glass of wine every now then is fine, but the whole world judges you if you dare suggest it!

My personal opinion is everything in moderation and if its not fresh and you didnt cook it dont eat it. Which is my non preggy stance of food anyway ('cept at restaurants, then its just a gamble lol).

I will be having my chrissy ham this year, on christmas day and MIL is going to cook it up so its nice and listeria free for bubs. Might even heat some up the next morning for ham on toast!

Highly opinionated ramble over

I agree with that statement, with my DD18, DD17, DD13, DD8 I was eating raw seafood and all the no no foods with them & now it's just my last 2 pregnancies and this one that I've really taken notice of the food rules....

I've been told that the proper heating and storage of cold foods are fine if handled properly...

I think the major problem is that we eat more pre-prepared food now, as compared to 10-15 years ago, and you can't guarantee the food safety of something you haven't made yourself.

I do agree everything in moderation, but as we didn't have a hot ham (and I far prefer cold meat anyway! ), I thought it best to avoid it. It's a hard place to be in though - on the one hand, you do end up overly paranoid because of all the warnings, but then again, how would I have felt if I had contracted listeria and something horrible had happened?

I will be asking my Mum to make the ham for lunch on the day, instead of the day before, so we can have it hot not cold. Then if I want more after that I will just nuke it. (We have Christmas as a family and Mum always makes the ham).

I missed ham last Christmas, so much!!

I didn't eat any but next time I am pregnant I will be nuking it to piping hot...cold definitely a no go for me... I don't go with the it was fine in our day thing because of reasons stated above and because just cause it was ok once doesn't mean it would be again....BUT it's whatever you are personally comfortable with I just didn't want to risk anything at all.

The leftovers will be worse than the initial meal as there's been time for bacteria to develop.

I cooked my ham (vacuum packed boneless stuff) on the BBQ (we were camping) when I was 39 weeks. I did have a wee bit of cold stuff when it was first opened, as all meat is fine if its vacuum packed and consumed straight away.

Don't be jealous of my nut loaf Tracey  lol I have actually never made a nut loaf but I do vaguely recall eating ham out of pure desperation to stop spewing about 10 years ago with my first pg....um needless to say it didn't work lol

Yep As long as its been refrigerated obviously and you eat it the day you open it! I unfortunately didn't find this out until I was about 38-39 weeks, needless to say hubby and I had ham sammies that day!

Isn't pretty much anything vacuum packed ok? My midwife said same for blue cheese - if it's sealed and I open it and eat it it's fine - just don't keep it open in the fridge and have it again later (no problem, just eat the whole thing at once lol). She said the same for pate too. Unfortunately vacuum sealed supermarket pate is nothing compared to the stuff mil makes. (and I know, shouldn't have too much anyway because of the something-or-other...vitamin A is it?)

Anyway so this is great huh, open the ham when you're hungry and have a big pig out on cold ham, then have it hot the rest of the time

Mmm all this talk of ham...I'm going to get croissants and have ham, tomato and cheese croissants for brunch I've decided

I thought the main problem with pate, at least liver pate, is the massively high content of Vit A?

We went to a gala opening of a friends play, paid extra for nibblies as part of the ticket, guess what they put out on our tables... a platter of ALL cold meats with a cut up tomato sitting on the meat, fetta in the middle and bread nestled in with the meat! I was starving and soooo cross!

Just wanted to point out that the listeria 'scare' earlier this year (while I was preggers) was a recall of pre-packed cold meat (admittedly only supplied to hospitals and cafes), so if it was me, I would be heating even vacuum packed meat.

and bummer about the nibbles Tracey - I went to a wedding that was almost as bad

Just to add my 2c ... I absolutel love my cold cuts and seafood, especially sashimi and don't even get me started on wine... so am finding it all a bit hard!

Having said that, I am just trying to be sensible - so will def be eating ham this Xmas, but will be heating it up. And I do have a sip of wine every now and again. The only thing I will not touch is sushi and sashimi... guess what I am eating as soon as this baby is born!

It can all get very difficult, and as my ob said - a recent case of listeriosis in a patient of theirs was from eating raw veggies... so sometimes you just can't win.

Ok, spiel over

You could always cut off thick slices of the cold ham and have grilled ham steaks with hot pineapple rings. I do wonder too about all the food advise these days i know its better to be safe than sorry but sometimes you just can't avoid it i local dairy company had a listeria scare earlier this year too. Its just part of the risk that we take as a women when we decide to get preggers.

I love my ham off the bone at christmas time and last year I was in your shoes. Actually we were away with a bunch of friends and they were all eating this cold ham of the bone and I got so upset I cried. (hormones)
I am so looking forward to my ham this year!
So all I can say is have a good cry about it and look forward to next year because once you hold you little bundle you'll agree its all worth the missing out of ham.

I spoke to my midwife about the ham off the bone thing on Christmas day and she said that I cant have it cold but just pop it in the frying pan and sizzle both sides and I can have it, os that's what I'll be doing.

mmm I'm so hungry after reading all this, been really good to hear everyones advice, I only have the M of Health booklet to go by my MW hasn't really given me the big food talk. I will be eating hot ham yummm this xmas.

I heard of a women who got listeria from those mussels cooked and marinated (but cold) from the supermarket. if you are eating vegies out of a garden where a cat might have been you can catch it from raw vegies.

I eat lil amounts of whatever I want and have done throughout.. Cold ham, smoked salmon. I just listen to my body as I truly think it knows best..
