Hiya,
Just wondering what the story is with this. I know what it does to the baby but what does it take to get there?
I've had the most amazing cravings for a glass of Merlot. I bought a bottle tonight and am slowly sipping on one standard size glass. I'll only have the one and the bottle will last me for at least a week (maybe a glass every second or third night). Is this too much? All up i've only had about 3 small glasses through out the whole pregnancy and the Doc said they odd glass is fine. I didn't have a drop for the first 12 weeks and only had a glass if we were out for dinner and one on my birthday.
So, am I harming the baby? I know one glass tonight wont hurt but just curious about what you can and can't have.

It's totally up to you!
I know my mum had the occassional wine (and DH's too) when she was pregnant with me and I've turned out ok.
Just don't drink to excess and be sensible.
I had my first full glass of wine the other night with DH and it was lovely!

I didn't drink any alcohol while pregnant. At certain times during the babies development, it's more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, such as the first trimester and towards the end of the third trimester. I personally don't think it's worth the risk, but it's an individual choice.

i wouldn't. they have no information on when and how much you can ahve, hence they say just avoid it. I know you're craving it...I craved other things during pregnancy that are a no-no too (eg sushi, ham etc). Is it really worth it? Wouldn't you feel like a real...if it gave baby FAS?

I didnt drink either....not a sip as I was tooo scared as too what it would do to baby. I guess when Docs say its ok, they dont even know how much is too much.....They say it affects the brain development so when it safe? I mean as far as I know baby is developing its brain thru out the pregnancy.
I guess like others I think its not worth it....I also crave beer at times and sushi....man I miss sushi! But I will hold back till after I give birth.
And a bottle for a whole week might be a little too much? Please dont take it wrong as I really dont know how much is too much!

I also still craved a wine during pregnancy but didn't drink at all for the first of 12 weeks. After that I had half a glass of wine every 6 weeks. I use to mark it on the calendar and pour my half glass. The weird thing was once I had poured it and had about 3 sips I didn't want it any more. I think for me it was more the ritual. I also use to have a sip of DH's beer every now and then.
I personally wouldn't drink a whole glass at a time and wouldn't drink a bottle in a week but I think a glass every 3-6 weeks is sweet. But that is just my opinion and it really is a personal choice!

I've heard from a couple of midwives that around 10 weeks is the worst time, and after that is ok to have the odd glass. I've heard from other sources that no one knows what is safe, and from others still that say a few a week is fine! I can't seem to find a straight answer about what's ok and what's not!
I have one friend who has about 2-3 glasses of wine a week, another who had one glass a week ago and felt so guilty that she went home and cried about it, and another that wouldn't dream of touching any while pregnant. Everyone has different opinions about it! I can see myself having half a glass on special occasions maybe, to be honest I haven't had any real cravings for it so I haven't had to worry about it yet!

I think it is totally a personal choice.
I found out I was 3 weeks pregnant (totally unexpected) and during those 3 weeks I had my hens night, my wedding day and was on honeymoon, and as I had no idea I was pregnant at the time, of course I was drinking up a storm.
When I found out I was pregnant, I cried for days wondering what damage I had done to my unborn baby from the alcohol I had drunk. I felt terrible and very unresponsible, I felt I had failed my child already and it wasn't even born yet.
On the other hand, I have a friend that has 6 children and she has had a glass of wine every week with every single pregnancy, she feels that that is o.k and that is her choice. Her children are nearly teeagers now and have no signs of FAS.
Each to their own, but personally I wouldn't risk it, knowing how worried I was about the alcohol I had consumed while pregnant.

it really depends on your phisiology (Sp?) as to how much you can drink and what is safe. which is why there is no hard and fast set rule.
It is common knowledge that there is an amount that is unsafe but nobody knows what that is and it varies from person to person.
So... just take it slowly and listen to your body, if you start to feel a little bit dizzy , hot, tired or tipsy then stop!
Also it probably helps if you sip water in between the wine or have it with food.
My doctor said no more than 2 glasses per night which i feel is too much for me personally.

Both DH and my mother did have the odd glass of wine when pregnant with us, I suppose it is luck of the draw.
I havent had one drink and wont, like the others have said its a personal choice, there isnt a lot of information out there about the effects of alcohol, that will be why they say to avoid it all together.

I didn't drink at all during my pregnancy. But I'm not a big drinker anyway.
After studying human development for this semester and reading some of the stuff on FAS there isn't any way I'd go near alcohol next time around either. There are stages during pregnancy where bubs is more vulnerable and if anything wasn't perfect when he/she was born I'd feel like crap.
But that's just MHO. Some docs say its fine, some don't.

Personally, I consider alcohol one of those things to avoid altogether, more so than the usual list of foods to avoid while pregnant. But that's just me.
I know we use the term "personal choice", but is it really a personal choice when the baby itself doesn't get to choose?

its one of those personal choices and they really dont know how much is too much as they cant obviously do trials! my train of thought was that you know what it does to your liver and effects that you feel and that your liver has to process it and it crosses to the baby so its tiny liver has to cope with processing it too - put me off drinking and I love my wine!

I don't crave wine [I don't like any other alcohol except wine] but I don't have it when pg to be on the safe side and I definitely do miss it. What I have heard is that everyone has a different level of "ok" and no one knows for sure where the line is, so its best to avoid altogether for pg and bf. I have chosen not to have wine while pg because I can't tell if the baby is affected or not. Personally I think 1/2 glass every now and then would be fine but I haven't done that. However I do drink the odd wine when bf (9mos pg + 12mos bf was too long to abstain!!) but I figure I'll be able to see if there is an effect on baby [unsettled, overly sleepy, etc] once it's "outside". Even so, I've never been a big drinker and I limit it to a full glass with food per day.

My mw told me that it can happen at any stage with any amount of alcohol. So basically it could happen with a glass or it could happen with a binge.
I'm really wanting some baileys...and esp since baileys has an expiry date which is before my EDD......but its not worth it!!
Personal choice really.. But why make that choice to drink for an innocent baby?

I think some of the comments re..."making a choice for the baby" are a bit mean...I think most/all of us take into account our child when making a decision while pregnant!
We all just have different levels of what we are comfortable with usually based on our experiences, parents experiences, mw/dr's advice etc.

I had nothing for the first 12 weeks and after that would spoil myself - we'd get a bottle and between the 2 of us drink it over 3 nights. This was maybe every 6 weeks. The big time for FAS is in the first trimester, but I also thought about the effect of ongoing exposure to low amounts of alcohol. I also had rules about having it with a meal and with lots of water.
Like everyone said, it's your choice. We don't know what damage it might do, if any. Some people drink regularly and have no problems, others drink little and have big problems.

Guys, When I meant a bottle, I meant one of those small mini bottles, not a whole large one. I'm not sitting here guzzling a massive bucket of red wine. The glass i'm talking about is a small amount in the bottom of a wine glass.
And even if I had one normal glass, I think saying "It's not giving the baby a choice" is unfair as it's not like i'm putting a wine glass to the baby's mouth.
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear about the amounts I was referring to but I think a few of the comments that have come back are a bit unfair.

I don't think anyone is trying to be harsh or to make you feel guilty....you asked for opinions and there are a variety of answers that's all. Like others have said, people have different levels of "ok".
With regards to your comment above..well, technically everything you consume is passed onto the baby. So we do actually make the choice for the baby whatever we decide to consume.
