HI ladies

Jayden is a week old today and I came down with a throat infection / cold thing yesterday. I am so paranoid about passing it onto him ive turned into miss hand sanitiser and wont kiss him etc.....

is it true that through the breast milk that babies wont catch what you have because of the antibodies? or can you pass colds etc onto bubs even though they are getting your milk?

thanks ladies

He should be fine, breastmilk is a marvellous thing in terms of passing on immunity. I've had a nasty bug this week, as have the rest of our household but touch wood Chiara has been fine.

I agree with Maya. I got a 24 hour vomiting and daiorhea (sp?) bug when Lauren was just 6 weeks old. I continued b/f right through it with reassurance from my m/w that Lauren would not get it. I was petrified as I was so ill how could she not catch it!!

M/w was right, Lauren was perfectly fine, it never affected her at all!!

We've had all sorts of bugs in the house since Emma was born - both me & DH have had at least 2 colds; Gina had the flu and also a tummy bug. Emma has been only healthy one the whole time - never cought a thing. I too have heard b'milk helps and we have also practiced strict hand hygiene - seems to work here

In addition to the breastmilk, your baby also got lots of antibodies from you accross the placenta. These last for 6 months.

A Dr told me this a week ago, after I was complaining about A being sick despite still breastfeeding - he said she was only getting limited antibodies from the bm now - the main protection when she was little was the placental antibody (which has now run out).

Yeah I managed to give Ella the cold I got when she was only a few weeks old.
She only got a very small dose of it though whereas DH and I had it for ages.

What she said. When I was up in AKld for Chaira's birth I had a nasty flu and cold infection and wasnt going to attend the birth but Emma reminded about the BM and mums passed on immunity and so attended and Chiara was fine. Didnt catch a thing considering I was with her from birth and even had her in the car where with me just hours after birth going to birthcare.

Not to mention her being dragged out of her nice warm cocoon into the big wide world then out of the nice warm hospital into the freezing night air then into nice warm Birthcare

DJ that's interesting to hear that it also passes from the placenta, cos Gabs is bottlefed from birth and although I had two colds in her first month of life, she never got them. I was worried particularly cos i wasn't bfing that she would come down with a cold, so I was really fussy about washing my hands all the time and she hasn't been sick (touchwood) for one single day of her life yet.
