Topic: teats for nb-expressing/ feeding amounts? Posted: 25 July 2008 at 10:46am |
hi ladies
glad to hear im not the only one out there expressing aussiegirl I was wondering what newborn bottle and teat is best? to ensure a slow suck and less wind / reflux etc, I got the advent ones but little Jayden skulls it back and vomits a bit....any advice would be greatly appreciated
also on expressing is there any information out there as to how much to feed each feed etc or a calculation? im at this stage to my mw horror expressing each feed as bf was taking 2-3 hours and little Jayden was not happy!

The calculation is 150mls x body weight and then divide by number of feeds in a 24 hour period.
e.g 150 x 3.3 = 495mls divide by 8 = 61 mls.
That was the calculation I was given by my MW for formula but she did say that it was the same for expressed breast milk so hope that helps as their weight increases you just change the calculation.
Can't help with the bottles as DS was formula feed but we used the Avent bottles and teats.

We used the avent bottles with the slowest flow teat for ages, but Chloe threw up heaps anyway because she had reflux issues (which were way worse when BF as opposed to having expressed milk, but she had gaviscon for a while which helped). Around that age Chloe was drinking around 60mLs per feed, sometimes more.
Does he skull back a whole bottle at once? I had to stop Chloe and burp her 2-3 times in between to get most of it to stay down... that way she had less wind and didn't get the milk too fast either.

I am expressing each feed for Emma at the moment and did the same for Gina for the full 6 months she was on b/milk
I have used the Tommee Tipee closer to nature bottles & teats (#1 for newborn) and those have worked great for us. BTW Gina was a fast drinker too and some amount of spilling is OK. We got some slow-flow teats for Emma when we got discharged from hospital and those drove me mad - it took her hearly 1.5-2 hours to finish a feed!!! We switched to the Tommee Tipee ones very quickly.
As for volume, I thought it was 180ml per kg up until they are 6 months old - maybe this is just for premmies? At the end of the day, they'll eat as much as they want - we offer Emma 150ml each feed and she normally has 120ml
Good luck expressing and feel free to PM me - I feel like an 'old hand' at it now - have been going for 10 months combined

We used Avent with the gremlins, and using Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature with Chiara but only so we can distinguish between their bottles and hers.
The formula calculations don't really apply to breastmilk as formula is much denser, a lot of formula fed babies have bigger, less frequent feeds whereas breastmilk fed babies tend to need feeding more frequently as it digests faster.
At Jayden's age the gremlins were taking approx 80-100ml per feed and feeding 3 hourly so around 8 feeds a day. I would start off with a smaller amount then give them more if they finished it so as not to waste any of my precious breastmilk!
Hope that helps. I express fed them for 10 weeks coz they wouldn't latch. If you are keen to get him back on the breast tho it might be worth asking your m/w for a referral to Plunket Family Centre, they are great with helping get feeding sorted coz you go there for the whole day and they observe and help you to latch at each feed.

I just rang a friend who is expressing at the mo and her MW told her the same calculation as above but told her she could use any figure between 120 - 180mls as her guide as its just a guideline so that you are not over or under feeding.

I used the NUK brand classic teats that have the anti-colic hole thing on them. If you get these they also have different ones for breastmilk that have a smaller whole to the ones they have for formula

Im using the tommee tippee ones that have a nipple like teat and they are anti collic aswell.
Caden is now on formula as I cant breastfeed for certain reasons, but when I was still breastfeeding and formula feeding I found them great as he would still latch onto my breast well cos of the teat on the bottle.
