Topic: Pram and second baby Posted: 16 June 2008 at 4:53pm |
just wondering for those who have been in this situation, am wondering whether it would be manageable to cope with one pram with two kids - ie say a 2 year old and a newborn?
Am i dreaming ?
Would you/do you really need a double pram?

Haven't been in the situation yet but I am definitely going to get one as I want to know that I can still get out each day for a walk even just for half an hour.

When I first found out I was pregnant I went out and brought a pram with a todler seat (it was a good special) But since DD#2 came along I have hardly used it. Its good for just walking in the street but I find it too bulky for the shops. I guess only I use it because I have it and feel that I paid for it I need to get my moneys worth from it. But could definately survive without it. Even though DD#1 is probably slightly older, she still likes her Pram a lot of the time.
What I have found really useful is having a front pack (moby wrap) I just put DD#1 in her stroller and carry the baby handsfree. And when DD#1 decides she wants to walk I lay the stroller back and put the baby in the pram and she holds the side.
I was quite impressed when I told her she had to walk beside the pram and hold on she atcually did it and was quite excited by it. It did take longer but was a lot easier than having the double stroller.
So I dont think your dreaming only wanting a single pram. There are quite a few different ways you can make it work with 2 small children.

I'm gonna have to make it work! I have a double stroller, but I have 2 toddlers, so baby is going to have to go in a sling. Like Daizy I have a Moby Wrap and I also have a sling so I can carry baby and have the gremlins in the buggy.
It depends how old your older one is too, I found with Maya at 2 she needed the buggy quite a lot but by 2 1/2 she hardly ever needed it. They grow up a lot in that short time.

A double stroller is great but if you are wanting the cheap way, what I did was to purchase a baby sling s/hand from TradeMe for $25. Then when baby was old enough to sit upright, I bought a double "umbrella" stroller from Warehouse for $92. The seats don't lay down, so that's why I needed the sling at first. But I actually liked the sling.

If you don't want a double-pram, one that fits a toddler seat is a good idea. Mine was $400 all up, I think (from memory, which is hazy!). Ella's quite happy in the toddler seat - she's ridden in it when a little friend of hers has been in the pram part. Only problem is that you can't stick the sun cover or storm cover over.

I think it also depends on what you'll be using it for. I was adamant I didn't want a double stroller, I planned to just use my sling and push DD1 in the stroller or let her walk and put the baby in the stroller.
But now that DD2 is here (she's 4 weeks, DD1 is 21 months) I am finding it difficult and am looking at buying a second hand double stroller off TM, mostly so that I can do bigger walks to the local library etc. and longer walks with other mums - town I will still stick to the original plan as it works for short trips. Main problems I have found are that DD2 doesn't tolerate the sling for too long, the stroller seems to be the one thing DD1 is very posessive of and gets very upset of the baby is in it, and DD1 isn't quite old enough yet to walk very far and is really slow.
If you don't do long walks, you'll be fine without a double, if you like walking most places or go for walks as an outing, you might want to get one.
ETA: I would love to get a moby wrap, haven't tried one yet but think it would be another option and probably better than my sling.

I have a double - a phil and teds - and wouldn't be without it. had a sling to start with when Sophie was first born, but its hard to do things with a sling (or frontpack) on, eg bend over, pick up toddler etc

hmmm this is really good to hear. DD1 is 11 months and am just thinking ahead as maybe thinking of trying for DD2 soon so trying to work out the logistics!
Would like to just have the one pram and use a front pack/sling but then we also like doing big walks etc so maybe i wil need to get a double pram. hmmm. not sure about the phil and teds double as the setup with two looks a bit uneven and close to the ground. also dont like the idea of toddler sitting almost on top of where newborn lies.
nicolaann - how have you found yours?

We have a Phil and Teds too. I like it, it's far better than the side by side one I had when the gremlins were smaller. The only thing I find hard atm is getting a gremlin in and out of the toddler seat, but that's only coz I am so pregnant. Luckily they are pretty good at climbing in and out themselves.

Oh and the good thing with it is it can be used as a single buggy as well so hopefully once the gremlins are bigger and listen better I'll be able to just use the single buggy for baby.

Sunshine I find my phil and teds really good. It was great when Sophie was little, and in the baby/toddler mode. She was hidden away, which meant she was nice and snuggly, and also out of the sun. Also, unless you knew she was there, you couldn't really see her, so a lot of people didn't stop and annoy me!! I haven't really used it much in toddler/toddler mode, but it worked well when I did. Yes I guess Sophie is quite low to the ground, but not too low (if that makes sense). I really recommend them, they are a great, sturdy, easy to use buggy!!
