    Posted: 17 May 2008 at 11:57am
Is sushi ok during early pregnancy. The sushi I am meaning is one containing no raw fish. So things like cooked chicken, cream cheese, avocado, pineapple, veges and off course rice and seaweed. No, the ingredients are not all in the same piece.
I am thinking obviously raw fish it out. And would the one with a couple shrimps and crabmeat be out?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but wondered about the chicken ones.

Thanks in advance :)

I got told to just avoid all of it - think possibly because you cant be certain how long the rice etc has been sitting around since being cooked

Cold rice is a no-no in pregnancy too - it gets germey.  Be careful with re-heated rice too, it's gotta be piping hot.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, 'cause sushi can be divine!

Actually it's the rice that is the problem.

If the sushi is made properly - i.e. traditionally - then rice vinegar is used and this actually has properties which kill the bacteria and make the sushi safe to eat. That's why when you buy sushi it isn't refrigerated.

The problem is you can never be sure if it has been made properly so you run the risk of getting ill.

If you want to make it yourself so guaranteed fresh it's ok but stick to chicken that you have prepared and chilled yourself or just vege fillings.

I thought it was only store bought you should avoid but if you made it yourself and ate it straight away it was ok?

Have just found the food safety in pregnancy chart the midwives hand out and it says

Don't eat store bought at all

Home made - use freshly cooked rice, no raw meat or seafood, eat immediately, don't eat leftovers.

Hope that helps

I had homemade when I was preg with the gremlins, wouldn't trust store bought at all, coz like others have said, the rice can be nasty.

Thanks for the advice. I was pretty sure that was the case.
Does anyone know why? Something to do with listeria isn't it? I'm presuming this causes a stomach bug type of reaction which is harmful to the unborn baby?
If this was to happen, how soon would someone get ill? Perhaps they had something before knowing they are pregnant?

My friend did a 'make your own sushi night' at her place when I was 7 months pregnant. I ate so much I practically rolled out of there. It was great though as it tided me over until the birth.

First non hospital meal = sushi

I am so craving sushi right now - I haven't made it at home yet since I've been pregnant, because last time I made it, it turned out to be a bit of a disaster!!!

If you asked at the restaurant if they make it fresh and they said yes, would you then trust getting some vegetarian sushi?
I had some the other night - the rice was still a bit warm but after reading this I wonder if perhaps I shouldn't do that again!
It did taste FANTASTIC so I guess it was a good last meal of sushi for a while.

I just wouldn't risk it - 9 months is a very short time really (although I know about the cravings) and you want to give baby the best chance so if that means steering clear, then I guess that's just what you do.

Hehe Bobbie, first non-hospital food for me = KB's chicken mayo roll yum! (sorry ladies that can't have them at the mo!)

I've been eating vegetarian sushi - but then i've been eating everything anyway (cept shellfish) wasnt aware it was the rice that was the issue. You're gonna get sick wether you're pg or not really, luck of the draw really - personal choice of course!

it is personal choice but you are 20 times more suseptable to listeria and other such infections(when preg)... so yeah it is actually about whether you are preg or not:( ! sorry .. as someone said 9 months is such a short time!! i was digusted at CWH feeding me cold chicken and cold roast beef(ate the beef without thinking then found out about a listeria scare..thankfully not in chch!! you'd think in a maternity ward you'd be safe!!
