Is sushi ok during early pregnancy. The sushi I am meaning is one containing no raw fish. So things like cooked chicken, cream cheese, avocado, pineapple, veges and off course rice and seaweed. No, the ingredients are not all in the same piece.
I am thinking obviously raw fish it out. And would the one with a couple shrimps and crabmeat be out?
I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but wondered about the chicken ones.
Thanks in advance :)

I got told to just avoid all of it - think possibly because you cant be certain how long the rice etc has been sitting around since being cooked

And chicken coz you are not meant to eat cold meat or how old the chicken is or when it got made....

Cold rice is a no-no in pregnancy too - it gets germey. Be careful with re-heated rice too, it's gotta be piping hot. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, 'cause sushi can be divine!

Actually it's the rice that is the problem.
If the sushi is made properly - i.e. traditionally - then rice vinegar is used and this actually has properties which kill the bacteria and make the sushi safe to eat. That's why when you buy sushi it isn't refrigerated.
The problem is you can never be sure if it has been made properly so you run the risk of getting ill.
If you want to make it yourself so guaranteed fresh it's ok but stick to chicken that you have prepared and chilled yourself or just vege fillings.

Have just found the food safety in pregnancy chart the midwives hand out and it says
Don't eat store bought at all
Home made - use freshly cooked rice, no raw meat or seafood, eat immediately, don't eat leftovers.
Hope that helps

I had homemade when I was preg with the gremlins, wouldn't trust store bought at all, coz like others have said, the rice can be nasty.

Thanks for the advice. I was pretty sure that was the case.
Does anyone know why? Something to do with listeria isn't it? I'm presuming this causes a stomach bug type of reaction which is harmful to the unborn baby?
If this was to happen, how soon would someone get ill? Perhaps they had something before knowing they are pregnant?

My friend did a 'make your own sushi night' at her place when I was 7 months pregnant. I ate so much I practically rolled out of there. It was great though as it tided me over until the birth.

If you asked at the restaurant if they make it fresh and they said yes, would you then trust getting some vegetarian sushi?
I had some the other night - the rice was still a bit warm but after reading this I wonder if perhaps I shouldn't do that again!
It did taste FANTASTIC so I guess it was a good last meal of sushi for a while.

I just wouldn't risk it - 9 months is a very short time really (although I know about the cravings) and you want to give baby the best chance so if that means steering clear, then I guess that's just what you do.
Hehe Bobbie, first non-hospital food for me = KB's chicken mayo roll yum! (sorry ladies that can't have them at the mo!)

I've been eating vegetarian sushi - but then i've been eating everything anyway (cept shellfish) wasnt aware it was the rice that was the issue. You're gonna get sick wether you're pg or not really, luck of the draw really - personal choice of course!

it is personal choice but you are 20 times more suseptable to listeria and other such infections(when preg)... so yeah it is actually about whether you are preg or not:( ! sorry .. as someone said 9 months is such a short time!! i was digusted at CWH feeding me cold chicken and cold roast beef(ate the beef without thinking then found out about a listeria scare..thankfully not in chch!! you'd think in a maternity ward you'd be safe!!

I know it's the raw fish and the cold chicken that is the main problem, but surely the women in Japan don't avoid sushi or sashimi! Hehe
I definitely avoided it altogether when pregnant with Alyssa, but this time around I have had it a few times (with chicken). Decided to stop again when I had an overwhelming sense of guilt that I could harm the baby by being so complacent.

Ive avoided it, apparently its the rice as well as the other ingredients that we arent supose to eat, I think its ok if you make it yourself and eat is straight away
I miss sushi SO much! its the one thing I really miss, I even dream about it and know exactly where Im stopping on the way hoem from birthcare!!! im going to eat as much sushi as I can possilby fit in

I started off super strict and not eating sushi, but about 2 weeks ago I caved and had some chicken teriaki rolls and they were the best. Then we had some buffet food at work and I didn't eat anything that risky and I felt yucky afterwards so going to stop being complacent.
So no more sushi treats for me. And yes I was told it was the rice that was the bad bit.
If you get Listeria what happens?

Actually, I forgot about this when I typed my other response. I did have some sushi made at a Japanese restuarant (Yamagen at the Crowne Plaza in Chch). It was vegetarian and I only got it as it was part of my set menu (vegetarian - cos all the other ones had sashimi!) and it was fine.
I figured that as it was a 5 star restuarant, it should've been prepared pretty recently and if I got sick, or something happened I would've sued them or something.
I know of a few women who ate sushi from the malls, as well as subway and all the other things they tell you not to eat 'just in case' of food posioning during their pregnancies, and they all have had healthy bubs.

I've had teriyaki chicken sushi several times but only homemade and while the rice was still warm. It is mostly the rice that is the problem with food poisoning, apparently it is the perfect breeding ground for the germs for some reason (forget what it is now)

The problem with Listeriosis is that it mainly affects people with compromised immune systems - the elderly and pregnant women - as those who have robust immune systems can fight it off.
If you get it non-pregnant, you'll get flu like symptoms and vomiting, and usually get better pretty quickly (altho a friend of Mum's from church who is in his 80's got it and had 2 weeks in hospital ).
When you're pregnant, however, the listeria bacteria can cross the placenta, and you might not neccessarily get listeriosis yourself or have any symptoms, but it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
The risks are pretty low, on average 2 cases a year reported (this years wee epidemic notwithstanding) BUT the consequences if you do get it are devastating, and it IS only a really short period of time that you have to do without.

emachan mention subway as being something you shouldn't eat during pregnancy, does this include the subs with heated meats or meatballs? I have been craving it sooo bad! And I still have 34weeks to go, how will I survive if I can't eat it
I guess subway is my form of sushi

I ate Subway, atleast once or twice a week the whole way through my pregnancy as I travelled for my job, so it was either Subway or go hungry! I lived out of motels or my car (I was a Regional Account Manager so travelled the country every week for 7 years). I often flew and taking a packed lunch would not have worked as I could not keep it cold.
I always got vegetarian Subway and never once got sick!

Because you can transfer the listeria through your breastmilk, apparantly. Which is annoying because as good as my homemade sushi was, it just isn't quite the same. Plus it takes a whole lot of effort just for a 3 minute meal!!! Maybe I'm just lazy though....

I havent heard about listeria being tranfered thru breast milk? I thought it was only harmful for elderly ppl and pregnant women, it didnt say anything about breastfeeding in the info i got given on listeria...hmmm ill ask my midwife about that tomorrow I think, to be sure before I pig out on it lol

Not at all! The only way baby could get listeriosis post birth would be if you fed him or her something contaminated, or (highly unlikely) ate something contaminated and had traces of it on your hands when you fed bub or prepared feeds, so as long as you wash your hands etc. you're fine.
It really only is a risk during pregnancy because a) your immune system is compromised and b)it can cross the placental barrier without presenting as symptomatic in the mother.

Slightly off topic but just wanted to add, I had a severe 24 hour bug with daioreha (sp?)and vomiting when Lauren was just 4 weeks old and I continued b/f even though I was very ill. Lauren did not catch what I had as it couldn't be transferred through my breastmilk and my breastmilk gave her immunity from catching it from me!! My m/w assured me of this, and she was right!
Slightly off topic, but I just wanted to let people know a great benefit of b/f through sickness and that it can be done.
Now back to the subject at hand....

Hi Guys
While pregnant I would advise that you stay away from anything that has rice in it, unless you have cooked it fresh yourself.
What most people don't realise is that rice is one of the biggest causes of food poisioning around. Raw rice is fine but when it is cooked the protein structure in it changes and you shoould treat it like you would chicken and other meats.
When rice is cooked it should be spread out on a large tray to cool rapidly and then be covered and refrigerated. Reheat only once and it MUST be piping hot before you eat it.
2 hours is the maximum limit before bacteria growth reaches levels that make it unsafe to eat and this includes the cooking, cooling and production of the product into something else and then the serving of it.
While I know it is a pain and you might be craving certain things, unless you have made it yourself to be honest I would advise against eating anything savoury or cream/dairy filled from any restaurant, cafe, takeaway, Supermarket, delis etc. Some of the food hygiene practices and cooking methods at these places are very suspect.
It's not worth the risk and it's only for 9 months!
PS. I was a fully qualified working chef for 10 years before changing careers and knowing what goes on I am certainly not going to take a chance on risking my baby's life.
PPS sweet stuff like cakes (no cream) or muffins etc are okay as sugar is a natural inhibitor of bacteria

Ive found it quite tricky when Im out and about and Im REALLY hungry, where I would normally grab a sammie or sushi or subway etc I now cant and its so annoying. Especially over summer when I didnt want hot food I wanted a nice chicken and avacado sammie or a plain ham sammie but couldnt GAH so annoying, but definitly NOT worth the risk, so Ive only had hot ham and Ive had subway once or twice with the meat WELL heated.
I will eat hot meat pies from the bakery though, I was never told not to eat them. I was told to stay away from the likes of KFC and like any kind of chicken that I havent cooked myself.
