Pneumococcal vaccine?

They are planning on not continuing the menzb one and replacing it with this one (This is in BOP as meningitis has been wiped out, not sure of other areas). I will think about getting it once it is available but will have to pay for it as Bella was born in Dec.

When is the cutoff? Do some babies qualify and some not? And what exactly is it? Can you tell I'm far too lazy to google anything tonight haha!

Yep some of our very at risk wee babes get this injection.   Am unsure why they would stop giving the menzb one though to give this instead.

There was an article in the local paper about it- not sure of its accuracy but they are planning to scrap the menzb jab at the same time they introduce this one.

I was told by my Doctor and another Nurse (different practice) that the MenzB virus lives in the sinus cavity and even immunised people are carriers therefore you could have almost the whole population immunised and still get it. So it doesn't make sense to me that they would be scrapping it because it's 'dying out'. I mean yes, they may be scrapping it in favour of this other one but I doubt that's the reason.

yes its a diff vaccine - but that doesnt mean the menz b was useless cause they are for diff things as well. and the prevenar is also four doses.

Yep I definitely wouldn't say it was useless - just a different strain.

We'll miss you KA but I think it's a great idea to spend some times coming to grips with this.

The impression I get from things I've read is that this Pneumococcal virus thing is what goes can cause MenzB (as well as other things), so if this is the case if they kept up with the MenzB vaccine it would be like vaccinating twice for the same thing?

I had the gremlins done with the Pneumococcal vaccine in Oz as its on the free schedule there and we have Medicare. There's been evidence suggesting it reduces the incidence of ear infections in babies who are prone to them, and given that both of mine have had grommets for chronic infections I thought it was worthwhile.

Completely OT of WHAT the vaccines are for, IMO I'd far rather subject my child to 3-4 even 10 needles if it means avoiding these awful diseases. If they contract MenzB they end up having lumbar punctures and all sorts of other nasty procedures, not to mention the risk to their life, and limb, so I'll definitely be giving this bub all the available vaccines subject to me researching the testing and trial processes for the new ones.
