sorry i should clarify..he will definitely be getting all available vaccines..i didnt like that menz wasnt proven but in the end decided the benefits outweighed the risk but i guess i understand that its better he gets some menz protection in the meantime.. just sucks he has to have more needles:(!

I had the gremlins done with the Pneumococcal vaccine in Oz as its on the free schedule there and we have Medicare. There's been evidence suggesting it reduces the incidence of ear infections in babies who are prone to them, and given that both of mine have had grommets for chronic infections I thought it was worthwhile.

Completely OT of WHAT the vaccines are for, IMO I'd far rather subject my child to 3-4 even 10 needles if it means avoiding these awful diseases. Yeah I think it's a different strain though. I'd say that you're right though - this will be why the other one is being phased out. The cost of the new one if you don't qualify is something like $500 so we'll be sticking to the old MenzB.

so its a different vaccine? so the one he already had was useless..that pisses me off cause that was the one that hurt the most for him:(

so he will still get 3 more of this other one? or does he need four? I was told by my Doctor and another Nurse (different practice) that the MenzB virus lives in the sinus cavity and even immunised people are carriers therefore you could have almost the whole population immunised and still get it. So it doesn't make sense to me that they would be scrapping it because it's 'dying out'. this is from the article.

the vaccine programme starts on 1 june 2008. all babies who are born between 1 jan and 1 june 2008 will be recalled by their gp to recive the vaccine..(for those under 5 who remain ineligible after 1 june, you will have to buy it).

so all babies born from 1 jan 2008 will be eligible for the vaccine for free.

it is available now but has only been free to some children with severe health problems...otherwise it costs about $400 for all four doses.

oh and the vaccine is called prevenar.

Not sure why they would do this - the reason (so the health industry claim) that the disease isnt prevelant anymore is because they vaccinate so not vaccinating just cause there have been no cases of it doesnt make sense...

I am def getting it. My friends wee boy was admitted to hosp for 14 days with this exact thing. The only symptom he had was a slightly high temp and that was it. They caught it early and he is all good now but they were told about the vaccine by the dr's and nurse there. DH and I discussed it when P was in hosp and made our decision after reading teh article today.

They are planning on not continuing the menzb one and replacing it with this one (This is in BOP as meningitis has been wiped out, not sure of other areas).
