crap Josh is normally on Karicare Birth but have just brought the thickened one as the plunket lady said to get the hungry baby one for him which i couldnt find so hopefully this is the right one.  Man i hope he doesnt react!!  I thought it would be different brands that would do that.  Hey at least Karicare has lots of different special allergy formulas might have to keep trying them to find a good one.  Hope its not too serious.

I thought they did still sell it?  It was just cos of one ingrediant that hadn't been tested in nz but has been approved in numerous other countries (the ingrediant that encourages better sleep according to my midwife) or was that something else?

Yeah that is exactly right, has been approved in the EU and plenty of other places. Karicare were going to take legal action over it because it was an unwarranted attack on them.

I give Bella a top up and personally I hated the Karicare stuff when I used it. I then bought S-26 gold and find it great as it mixes well and hasnt caused extra wind etc. Maybe try a different brand?

He won't get chickenpox coz he still has immunity from you and your breastmilk over the past few weeks (assuming you've had it!)

What sort of reaction did he have? Classic allergic reactions (hives/anaphalaxis etc) can happen even after earlier exposure where there's been no reaction. My Maya had formula at 3 weeks old when I was in hospital with mastitis and was fine, then had nothing till 5 mths and had a severe reaction to a bottle of formula then.

he drank it and about 2 mins later rash everywhere..face , hands , body legs.. and about 10secs of huffing breathing.. and it went away when we stopped and he was then ok(temp fine ..laughing away).. rang Plunket they said try him again on the gold(that was normal) again and i did (50mls) and same but not quite so severe reaction...

went to docs at 535 and at 700(yes 7!!!!) gave him some more in front of doc and he had moderate reaction.. he said go get the one the lady suggested(the middle range one, not the one on prescription) couldnt find it but got s26 soy(which i think is the same as s26 lactose free?) and he drank it just now..no reaction and has gone to bed..

just before we left he set of the alarm today but was breathing and fine so hes freaked me out a lot today:( hopefully he hasnt inherited my food issues:(

Oh man, what the hell were Plunket thinking?????? If he came up in a rash and had breathing problems DO NOT try him on any other cows milk based formulas, period. I can't believe they thought the brand would make a difference! That makes me sooooo mad

Soy is OK as a short term solution but current practises in NZ don't recommend soy as a complete food for infants under 12 months, esp kids with cows milk protein allergy as there is a higher incidence of soy allergy in kids with CMPA.

Sorry, I don't want to sound bossy, but I have spent so much time unravelling allergies with my own kids that it has become a passion and it makes me mad that so many health professionals are so poorly educated - it puts our kids at risk.

My best advice is to see your GP on Mon and ask for an urgent referral to a paed - by urgent I mean they need to see you within the week, you will probably need to put him on Neocate which is a prescription only formula for kids with CMPA but he'll need to be assessed by a paed first. If they can't see you that soon, turn up at the ED at the hospital and refuse to leave till they do see you and do a full evaluation. They'll be able to sort the prescription and funding etc.

In the meantime, stick with the soy, but as I said, long term it's not recommended.

Sorry, I know you didn't ask for my advice, and feel free to ignore it, but trust me after spending time with 2 of my kids in hospital with allergy related issues and 5 years of dealing with allergies I know what I'm talking about!

PS Karicare do a formula called HA which is hydrolysed so more suitable for kids with cows milk issues, but from the sounds of his reaction, Ethan has true CMPA and he'll prob still react to the HA.

yeah i guess cause normally gold would be the one babies react to i guess.. and hehad been fine on it so she thought best of two evils i guess.and DH wanted to try him again on the karitane one he reacted to but i remembered about your post about not trying them twice so we didnt..(thanks)

Simon(my doc who i see if Tony isnt there) was the one on at the after hours and he said try this one(well the lactose one..which i assume is the same one? couldnt see a lactose one there and this lactose free?) and then tell Tony when i see him.but i will be ringing monday first thing (I'm allergic ..well intolerant to soy which i didnt know till i was 25)

lol i do appreciate it...:) yeah im avoiding all Karicare! so soy ok till monday when i see Tony?

No lactose free as it still contains cows milk protein, and it's not a Karicare thing or a Gold thing, it's a reaction to the cows milk protein which is found in all of the mainstream formulas as they are cows milk based. Babies who are allergic will react to all brands/types of cows milk formula.

Yep, stick with the soy till Mon as long as he is tolerating it OK. But really do push for an urgent paed appt as this is Ethan's entire food supply that is the issue so it is really urgent that it gets sorted. We mucked around for months trying goats/soy formulas etc. with Maya and she ended up in Starship for 10 days with gastric bleeding coz her poor digestive system had been too damaged.

Hugs Kawww! I know you must be freaking out chick, but I'm sure Ethan will be fine once you've seen the paed. I'll txt you on Monday probably once I get money on my phone to see how you guys are.

Just an aside, does Neocate work out the same cost wise as normal formula seeing as you can get it on prescription Emma? Not that Jack's allergic or anything, I'm just being nosey

Yep, it's about $7 per tin on prescription but it comes in 450g tins so they are smaller than standard formula tins.

You can buy it off script but it costs $85

ETA: Actually that's a lie, you can't get it off script, but you can get it on script without a HFA # and that's when it's $85 a tin, sorry!

Which one says no cows milk protein? The soy one?

If he's taking the soy, leave him on that till MOn.
