Topic: A Few Solids Questions. Posted: 31 January 2008 at 1:33pm |
Hey Ladies..
Just have a few questions regarding this whole solids thing.
1. When did you start doing the 3 meals, Kylah has lunch and dinner. 4 cubes each feed (I make my own baby food) When should i up her to breakfast as well? Shes been on 2 meals for about 2 weeks.
2. What do you give for breakfast? And how do i make it?
3. What age do they start finger food? I give Kylah things in her fresh feeder.
4. Can i give her potato? Do i just cook them and puree it?
5. You dont need to add anything to any of her food aye? No salt, sugar or marg aye? I had an old lady proceed to tell me i should beadding butter to her carrots and sugar to her apple and pear, but i dont want to.
Sorry about all the questions.

Rusks are good to start for finger food.
Don't add sugar/salt/butter! Old people sometimes have some funny ideas. Just tell them that of course you will, and put it out of your mind as soon as you get home
Try her on 3 meals - if she takes it she's ready, if she doesn't like it, drop it. It's not going to do her any major harm.
Potato sounds tricky to prepare - I don't know how well most potato would puree and you don't want to be giving her milk in mashed potato, so maybe make it up with formula/breast milk? (and forget to tell your partner )

Spencer went onto three meals a day about 3 weeks ago, up until then he had no interest in brekkie, so I would say try and if she isn't interested leave a week or 2 then try again.
For breakfast Spencer has a fruit (normally either apple of pears) mixed with rice cereal and now he is a bit older and has lumps he has porridge with fruit. (watties etc make muesli's etc for bubs that you could try)
I think they normally recommend 6 months before starting finger foods, Spencer couldn't have rusks so instead we started with pieces of apple (cut into sticks so he could hold them) the same with pears and cooked carrots and have just worked up from there. To start with he would chew them up and spit them out but now he demolished who crakers and strawberries and big bits of apple.
Yes you can give potato, I find the best thing to do is steam (or boil) and then add some of that water in with them when you blend them. Once she is eating lumps then you can just mush with a fork, still using a bit of the water to help make them creamy.
Don't listen to old people, they are mad!!!!

1. Bella's still only on 2 meals a day - I have tried brekkie but she isn't interested, I will try again in a week or so (but she seems happy enough thus far)
2. When I did try brekkie, first I tried like baby rice with some pureed fruit or banana custard or baby museli with mashed banana/pureed fruit (she just didn't have any of that, kept spitting it out and I know she likes the foods cos she'll eat them at other times!)
3. I've just started finger good - I think the recommendation is 6 months +...we do rice crackers, rusks, chopeed fruit in bite sized pieces, toast and fresh food feeder
4. Don't see why you can't puree potato - I do (I don't add anything except maybe some water to stop it from being so 'gluey') and find its great to pad out some other veges etc.
5. Definitely don't need to add anything, if you want to sweeten something, just add a cube of pureed apples...

I thought i would try the potato to add some more variety.
She has at the moment - Mango, Kumara and pear. That was to introduce veges as she wouldnt eat them.
I had some left over cubes of pumpkin so today for lunch she had 2 cubes of kumara, mango and pear and 2 cubes of pumpkin. Random mix but she likes it.
Today i am going to make carrot and mango. Also i have some kumara and apples and what to do something with potato.
Can they have cauliflower and brocolli?
Oh yeah she tried parsip last night.. that was a hit too.. So mixing veges with fruit is a real hit for her.
I have a box of that cereal with apple here just looks bland and YUK when made up so might mix some fruit with it.

Bella HATED parsnips!! Its the only thing she hasn't eaten so far. Do you use the plunket guidelines in the Thriving under 5's plunket book? I have that on my fridge and use it as a guideline. It says broccoli and cauliflower for 6-7 month olds, but it is just a guide. Potato's pretty bland, I will add a cube or two and then a few other veges.

Yeah, they say 6 months but I can't see a reason for it as the purees up nicely. Spencer really loves brocolli, is not so keen on cauliflower. Other veges I give are green beans, peas and sweetcorn but until she can cope with lumps you have to push the peas and sweetcorn through a sieve as the skins don't puree, so is up to you as to whether you can be asked doing that.

1. When did you start doing the 3 meals, Kylah has lunch and dinner. 4 cubes each feed (I make my own baby food) When should i up her to breakfast as well?
We introduced brekkie after about 4 weeks of being on 2 meals a day, he just wasn't that interested in breakfast, and plus it's just a pain in the bum doing 3 meals. There's no rush to get her onto 3 meals
2. What do you give for breakfast? And how do i make it?
We are lazy and buy tinned stuff, he has banana porridge, custard or one of the museli varieties.
3. What age do they start finger food? We started around 6 months for proper finger food but used the fresh food feeder until then. Daniel gets lots of finger foods like vegemite sammies, carrots, apples, pears, peachs, watermelon, rockmelon, rice crackers, luncheon, toast, wafers etc. We just give him some sort of finger food after each meal.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you make up the cubes of vege purree, and how then do you prepare the cubes to give to your baby?

Just use an ice cube tray and freeze the puree and then reheat when ready to use. Just makes it easier as you can cook a bulk lot of veges and fruit and freeze them into cubes then mix them up different ways for each feed

Do you reheat them on the stove or can you microwave them? And when do you start giving them this kind of food? Also, how many cubes do you generally feed them to start with?
Sorry if I hijacked the thread a little...

I use the microwave but you could reheat on the stove, or even put the cube in something and then stand in hot water.
The general recommendation is not before 4 months and ideally not until 6 months, but really you just follow their cues, so watching you eat etc. Plunket give handouts on it and there is advice in the thriving under 5 book which you will be given at the hospital.
To start with he would not even have one, so just a couple of mouthfuls once a day to get use to taste/texture etc and then worked up from there.
Normally you would give breast/bottle first until 8-9 months and then the solids and they will let you know when they have had enough.

Thats ok janey.. jack away.
I use a magic bullet to puree my food, you can get them on trade me $1 reserve i won mine for $25 dollars and $15 postage brand new.
If you do buy one, make sure you check the containers that screw in first, didnt realiae mine was dodgy and the cup never screwed on properly and i was pureeing hot pears it popped and got really badly burnt!
Otherwise you could use a blender i guess, would be hard to get the food out tho.
I started kylah on a teaspoon for 2 days, 2 teaspoons on day 3 and after a week it was a cube, then 2 weeks was 2 cubes, now its 4 cubes twice a day!!

Just a tip for potatoes, I found that putting them through the food processor made it gluey. Someone told me it was due to the heat of the blade. They lent me a potato ricer - I hadn't heard of it before - it's like a giant garlic press. That mashed it finer than the potato masher, or you could push it through a sieve

Have a look at this. I printed out the foodguide and stuck it on the fridge. I think you get a similar one from Plunket but you dont do Plunket do you? I havent seen Plunket for ages so not sure what they give.
Another good site was www.forbaby.co.nz and if you sign up tomorrow you will probably get a free spoon.

Plunket do a food guide but it is funny as some things that I can give Lily on her special anti -allergy intro diet aren't on the plunket list till a bit older. Crazy.
Janey - if there are any allergies in your families then it is a good idea to delay as long as possible to get close to 6 months.

no allergies in my family, thankfully...
I know that you are meant to start giving them cooked fruit and veges, but when can you start giving them fresh fruit etc., like in one of those mesh food bag thingees?
