Author: Nikki
Subject: 14088
Posted: 02 February 2008 at 10:29am

Jake started on a third meal at 6 months - he started solids just before 5 months (on plunkets advice) and was on a second meal within a week (hungry boy!) .. once they are eating 1/3 of a cup or more/meal you can add the next meal. I added breakie when he was eating a jar of food per meal+ - before 6 months I had no desire to do 3 meals and didn't want to rush things (since it recommended they start solids at 6 months these days). It took a few weeks for him to eat much at breakie tho. We give him jars of baby porrige/oats/muesli and/or fruit.
Re broc/cauli - the reason you should wait til after 6 months is because they are harder on the digestive tract.

You could add pumpkin and kumara to the potatos, thats what I did - and added a little of the cooking water in to the blender to get the right texture. Or you could try pureed carrots, Jake loves them! (He has a sweet tooth).

Finger food - I started about 6.5 months but didn't give him much til 7 months. Like Spencer, he wasn't keen on the fresh food thingy, so I use it for "ice blocks" only now too. I put some fruit in it for him not long after he started solids, but he ended up just playing with it.

That was to introduce veges as she wouldnt eat them.

I had some left over cubes of pumpkin so today for lunch she had 2 cubes of kumara, mango and pear and 2 cubes of pumpkin. Random mix but she likes it.

Today i am going to make carrot and mango. Also i have some kumara and apples and what to do something with potato.

Can they have cauliflower and brocolli?

Oh yeah she tried parsip last night.. that was a hit too.. So mixing veges with fruit is a real hit for her.

I have a box of that cereal with apple here just looks bland and YUK when made up so might mix some fruit with it.

Bella's still only on 2 meals a day - I have tried brekkie but she isn't interested, I will try again in a week or so (but she seems happy enough thus far)

2. When I did try brekkie, first I tried like baby rice with some pureed fruit or banana custard or baby museli with mashed banana/pureed fruit (she just didn't have any of that, kept spitting it out and I know she likes the foods cos she'll eat them at other times!)

3. I've just started finger good - I think the recommendation is 6 months +...we do rice crackers, rusks, chopeed fruit in bite sized pieces, toast and fresh food feeder

4. Don't see why you can't puree potato - I do (I don't add anything except maybe some water to stop it from being so 'gluey') and find its great to pad out some other veges etc.

5. Definitely don't need to add anything, if you want to sweeten something, just add a cube of pureed apples...

(watties etc make muesli's etc for bubs that you could try)

I think they normally recommend 6 months before starting finger foods, Spencer couldn't have rusks so instead we started with pieces of apple (cut into sticks so he could hold them) the same with pears and cooked carrots and have just worked up from there. To start with he would chew them up and spit them out but now he demolished who crakers and strawberries and big bits of apple.

Yes you can give potato, I find the best thing to do is steam (or boil) and then add some of that water in with them when you blend them. Once she is eating lumps then you can just mush with a fork, still using a bit of the water to help make them creamy.

Don't listen to old people, they are mad!!!!

Old people sometimes have some funny ideas. Just tell them that of course you will, and put it out of your mind as soon as you get home

Try her on 3 meals - if she takes it she's ready, if she doesn't like it, drop it. It's not going to do her any major harm.

Potato sounds tricky to prepare - I don't know how well most potato would puree and you don't want to be giving her milk in mashed potato, so maybe make it up with formula/breast milk? (and forget to tell your partner )
