Topic: Drinking water Posted: 24 May 2011 at 7:11pm |
How much water do your babies drink? Jacob seems to be weaning himself off his daytime feeds - he'll still have a good feed when he wakes up and when he goes to bed at night, but he's been playing around in the daytime and both times when he woke up today and I offered him a drink he just giggled and pushed my boob away. But he doesn't seem to drink much water either. I usually offer him milk when he wakes up (and assume if he says no he's not thirsty) and a cup of water before he goes to bed, since now he's staying awake longer it's been a while since he had a drink and I'd hate to put him to bed thirsty. He'll have a sip or two of water, but that's it.
I'm not too stressed, I know he knows how to drink water when he is thirsty, so I suppose he can't be - but I did think it was a bit unusual! I drink a lot more than that - and he probably runs round more than I do!

What sort of cups have you tried? My DD hated drinking water until I got her a sipper cup with a straw, which is all she uses now. She drinks a couple of bottles a day easily, more if its hot or shes really active (but she doesnt drink milk so compensates for that too).
Try out of a pump bottle, normal cups, different sipper cups (with or without straws) or anything else you could find.
Good luck
ETA her bottle is about 300ml. I think at this age they should be having around 600ml (?) of fluid a day, which includes milk so if you think hes getting enough, I wouldnt worry to much

The dropping of the day feeds may well be in response to your milk changing with pregnancy. At that age I had various cups/sipper bottles and she would just have acess to them all the time. There would be a few dotted around the house in her favourite spots and she'd grab them if needed. But as for how much she was actually drinking, I've no idea to be honest!

He can't handle a straw yet - I've tried, but he doesn't get the idea, he just chews it. He's got a couple of sippy cups, but seems to drink most out of a plain cup when I hold it for him. I should try him with a pump bottle, see how that goes.

My girls have 2 bottle feeds/day, morning and evening. They drink approx 100-200ml of water/day.
(I think they dropped their daytime milk about 9 months.)
Both are small eaters & milk drinkers so I suspect their water consumption is small too.
We've got several kinds of sippy cups but had the most success with the NUK training cups - which unfortunately aren't non spill.

Do you give him water after meals? That is when Zac drinks the most water, after he has eaten. I also offer he he looks hot or has been upset etc. He doesn't drink too much though, especially since I stopped giving it to him from a normal bottle and its now in a sippy cup but he is slowly figuring out how to use it.

I only give DD with meals either from a sippy cup or she loves the mini pump bottle. I don't know how much she drinks as there isn't any measure on the cup / bottle to tell me. She seems to drink quite a bit and I still offer her a milk feed before each solid meal.

I don't think DS is drinking nearly as much atm as he used to - which i suspect is related to the temperature. So maybe if he has a coupld of decent feeds and wet foods he doesn't need too much at this time of year.
I found DS picked up his water intake at 1 year also, so might take a while for him to get used to it.
Final recommendation, we used a Nuby cup which has a suction sipper straw - so the water stays up the straw when you're not sucking - which makes for a quick reward when they do suck. Worth a try, if he doesn't get it straight away - he wont be far away from it :)

Hey there,
Noticed you were 6 weeks pregnant! Congratulations. His not wanting day feeds could have something to do with his age - wanting to be on the go, looking round, doing things, but could also be due to your pregnancy and the change in hormones =)
Kelly mom website has some good info on breastfeeding and early pregancy http://www.kellymom.com/nursingtwo/resources/pregnancynursing-faq.pdf
Depends when you were planning to feed until I suppose =)
If you find a good cup that works for me, let me know as my lil guy thinks sippy cups are for throwing on the ground =)

My boy cut down on BF's around that age and stopped at 1. He would only drink such a small amount of water it really worried me. It took a good month before he started to really drink from his straw cup. So just some reassurance that I'm sure he will get better at drinking more fluid. Keep offering it and he'll get it!

My bubs doesn't drink any water, she doesn't seem interested in it, so am still feeding her quite a bit.

DS was the same until just before his first birthday when I left his sippy cup behind and MIL's and pulled out a straw cup he'd not been able to work before then and he drank 200mls in one go! So we kept going with the straw. He'd also drink a bit more from a pump bottle before then. So I'd just keep trying the straws or other ones every 2-3 weeks and he'll eventually start drinking more.
