Topic: sleep for 8 month old Posted: 19 April 2010 at 10:42am |
how much would you expect an 8 month old to sleep now ??
at 7 months he was having 2 hours in am.. 2 hours midday and 2 hours in afternoon.. 10 hours through the night....
however.. we just returned from the UK last week and his patterns are ALL OVER the place.. wants to sleep al day and play all night.
I know hes probly ready for 2 day sleeps.. but for how long now.. should i wake him
any advice on getting him back into his NZ routine ??
thanks in advance

Can't help much on the routine as I've never been much of a routine person, but DS 8 month sleeps about 2 hours for morning and 1 - 2 hours in arvo. He will sometimes have a third sleep if he's had a short morning or arvo one but that's normally luck of the draw. Generally its 2 sleeps now.

Jackson has been doing 2 day sleeps for just about 2 months now. He has one morning sleep, up to 2 hours, and one afternoon sleep, up to 1.5 hours.
Sorry cant help with the routine side of things though.

There's a sample routine on the sleepstore website for 6-9 months and it suggests naps at 9am and 1pm for about 2 hours each and another at 4.30pm if the baby is grizzly (only about an hour). So that might be a good indication?

We have just moved to:
First Nap - 2 1/2 - 3 hours after awake (sleep anywhere between 45 mins - 2hours).
Second nap 3 hours after woke up from first nap. I wake her after 2 hours.
bed at 7 pm and sleep of around 11 hours.
Some kids go to bed earlier after first nap, my neice only lasted 1 1/2 hours after waking in the morning, but I think most are similiar to my little girl.
Not sure about the time zone issue. I guess you just have to be consistent and reinforce that's it night time. Big hugs as I imagine its tricky.

Thanks Chelle thats good info. Jackson is pretty much doing that routine without out me even realising ... His morning nap is usually between 9.30 and 10am depending on how he is going and afternoon nap is any time between 1 and 2pm.

Ashley is 8.5 months too. A month ago she was doing 2 x 2 hour naps and a 45min catnap in the afternoon. She now only does 2 naps of 45mins to 1 hour. It seems like dropping the catnap has thrown her sleep for a loop completely.
Generally if you are consistent they will eventually sort things out for themselves.

I hope your routine comes right soon. Interesting to hear that most babies are having lots of day sleep. DS only has about 1 1/2 to 2 hours of day sleep all together. That is three short day sleeps. You are so lucky to be having a two hour block!
We're going to have the travel/time difference issue in a few months. It doesn't sound like fun!

I agree, if only my DS would sleep that much
An average day is 2 x 45min naps. A sleepy day is 1 x 45min, 1 x 90min (it's a bit random which comes first).
He gave up the late afternoon nap at about 8mths.

Agree re. the short sleeping 8-9 month olds! My DS always has been (and I suspect always will be!) a short day sleeper. Randomly he will do a few days of 2 hours in the afternoon (? growth spurts) but generally he copes with 1 to 1.5 hours a sleep all day. Doesn't affect night sleep.
We too will be doing the whole time difference thing next month when we go back to the UK to visit. We did it before but he was 3-4 months - jet lag wasn't an issue (for him!!!).
It should take a few days before it settles back to what you had before -i.e. was he sleeping through the night before etc? I would aim to not let him sleep too long (use the answers on here as a guide and based on what he was like before) during the day and make your bedtime routine very obvious and consistent. I am obviously speaking as one who hasn't really a clue what is probably going to hit me next month -
share your tips when you get it sorted again!!!

im just trying to stay home as much as possible for the moment and keeping to the routine we had before the trip away..
waking in the night seems to be the biggest challenge.. he was sleeping 10-11 hours straight through and now hes waking at midnight and around 4am.. wanting a feed and a play..
Mistymolly.. Good Luck the travel isnt the tricky bit... its the routine change once your there !!
try and get a bassinett on the flights if baby is under the weight allowance.. a real life saver !! have fun
