There's always lots of talk about the baby names that we like. But what about those names that just, let's face it, aren't ever going to come back in?? Those names that have really had their moment? There might be the odd child out there saddled with one, but they will likely be few and far between! (I might be a little guilty of that with DS

So my pick for names that we probably won't see on the charts again -

Cyril
Basil
Cecil
Edgar
Reginald

Phyllis
Edna
Agnes
Muriel
Valmai

What others??

(Apologies to anyone who is thinking of using one of those )

Murgatroyd? But I reckon for any of those names there are people that don't think they're that bad.I hadn't even heard Valmai, but I kind of like it, and Phyllis is quite nice too.

I really like Basil and Cyril, they are actually on the rise those old fashioned names.

As for Agnes it is very common for P.I ladies as it can be short for Akenese or variations of that name.

I think the names I dont like are ones that Shaneekwa etc, those made up names.

My husband likes Basil!! It's a family name and it's one of those names I think is quite cool, but am not sure that I have the courage to use it!!

Don't feel bad kandk - I think this is an awesome discussion topic!!! No one would discuss names they don't like on the names thread...so, it's fun to have a thread where the point is to state names you don't like!!! No one should get offended....it's like a wee opinion poll!!!! (On the other thread I think you are almost obliged to say...oh, I love that name!!!!....or say nothing at all! )

Bruce?? All I can think of when I heard Bruce is that song.... "who would call a kid Bruce anyway" (I think it went like that)

DH's mum's middle name was Valmai. Never heard of it before until we meet. Was thinking of using it for a middle name if we had a girl.

I guess all the 80's babies are now naming their own babies!
You never here of any Cindy's or Tracey's or that sort of name that was popular in the 80's.

Lol my grandad's name is Bruce. I always struggle to imagine a child with that name as it just sounds all grown up.
But then my other Grandad is Jack which is still very popular.
And my grandmother's names, Evelyn and Elsie seem to be making huge comebacks whereas names from my generation and my parents generation don't seem to be popular.
When I think of all the names of my parents and aunties / uncles none of them are popular now!

A lot of Samoan girls are called Agnes or Aggie because of Aggie Grey who was a british settlers daughter. I can't remember the exact story DP has told me but she did alot for the community from memory. Her son I believe is still alive and lives on the island he is a very european looking man but can speak Samoan fluently. So most families will have at least one Aggie/Agnes in it. DP's does.

Oh and alot of them will have a Fa'afetai tele lava or Fa'afetai which means thank you very much or thank you. DP has an uncle named Fa'fatetai tele lava
