A lady who used to shop in the store i worked in had 2 boys named Hector and Ned.
They were only young... like 4 and 7 maybe?? i thought it was odd but she said she didnt want them to be Davids and Marks etc.

ETA That isn't having a baby to name the most exciting thing? Of course, our baby may possibly end up nameless, given me and DHs wildly opposing views, but I'm having so much fun thinking.

DH's cousin's wee girl is Olive and I know a few more, and my cousin had a baby last month called Elsy - never seen Elsie spelt like Elsy before, but its growing on me.

I like Alice which is my Nana's name, but doesnt go with our surname. My other nanas name was Olga!

I've got a good mate called Wayne (OK, so he's in his 20s, not a kid at the moment, but still only the next generation up).

Some of the old-fashioned names that have been mentioned I LOVE. I like that they're pretty names, but the kid's very unlikely to be in a class with another Elsie or Shirley (I like both of them). Hehe my Dad's name is Philip Murray. And his Aunty is Phyllis. His middle name is Gordon (same as both my grandads) and my little brother (aged 16) also has the middle name of Gordon....... I don't see that name making a comeback.
Kelly - funny you should mention the names Kelly and Lisa in the same sentence as I'm Lisa, and my little sister is Kelly!
Bruce is always one I shake my head at at think 'how could you look at a cute wee newborn and want to call it Bruce?!'. hehe my uncle's name is Bruce tho.
I also know a guy called Nigel, he's 21. His twin's name is Ian. Only other Nigel I know is my sisters cocker spaniel x beagle! Her other one is called Rupert! lol that's another name you don't hear much these days!
I like older names but not hideous ones haha. We have an Isla which is an older name (my Nana's best friend when she was 5 was called Isla) and I love the name Elsie also.
There are a few old names coming back in, like Millicent and Florence etc
I too think made up names are worse than old fashioned names. There are some shockers out there. DD was watching sticky TV a while ago and there was a girl on it called Xstacey. My aunty's stepson is Leslie. It seemed like a weird name for a wee boy when I met him 10 years ago (and he was only 5 or so).

I can't help but hear the song "who would call a kid Bruce anyway" when I hear the name Bruce too

Old fashioned names seem to be really popular over here (Singapore) for kids' "English" names. When I lived in hong kong I taught Cyril, Harold, Florence, Quentin, iris (which is popular now I think?)... And Elvis!!!!

I personally think Love, Flower, Tomasina and stuff to be mean names for girls, especially once they get to school! (and heaps more!)

I would call my child a name that would suit a adult rather than a baby because they are adults, children, teenagers (and a lot more open to critisism etc) for a heck of alot longer than they are a baby....

It's really surprising seeing alot of the older english names and bible names coming back in fashion. And less Storm, Ford, Holden etc etc!! (which I think is a good thing!!)

My grandparents are Bruce and Phyllis.
I am Sarah and I hated it growing up as Everyone had the same name. But I actually suggested it to DH as a name for our #3 but he said no. Hmph!!
DH's Gdad is Basil, he passed away this year. I really like it, I'd use it as a middles name but it might be a nono. IYKWIM. DH's middle name is Sage and I'd like to use Jade as a middle name if I have another girl. then Basil for a boy... All 'green' names I love green, amd I weird or what

Back on topic. Names that I hope won't make a come back. Virginia and Fanny!!!

I know a Fabian, born just this year.
and I love Daphne thats on my girls name list.

Yeah there's some names that I just can't imagine on a baby that would suit an adult just fine..

I think people have gotten quite into using different/unique names so that's why some of our more 70's/'80s names are going out of fashion hehe.

I doubt you'd meet a Gertrude these days! Shirley? My beautiful Gran was called that and it's a nice name but doesn't seem to get used much these days?

I can't imagine a baby Graeme... like, it's a nice adult name but hard to imagine for a baby.

Elsa.... haven't seen anyone call their baby Mark for a long time, only Marcus, same with Luke, tends to be Lucas. Haven't met a child Kate in a long time but know lots of adults called Kate... know lots of Caitlyns instead.. perhaps the more traditional names have evolved into others

Names like Emma, Sarah, Sophie, Jenna, Alisha, Natasha, Gemma, Natalie etc were all common when I was growing up (90's).

Dont feel bad, I wasnt offended at all, just saying I liked some of the names! I think if you are going to get offended by names then you must have it pretty good for that to be the only thing to bug you!

I like old fashioned names, and heaps of people will critisce but its not up to them its up to me.

I hate those 80's names but that is just because I am an 80's child! I am sure when I am a grandma/greatgrandma they will come back into fashion.

I am really odd and happen to like boys names for girls but then I feel bad because it makes the boys names seem less tough. .. I know a James, a Jamie and a Freddy who are all girls and they suit their names heaps.

lol names are fun to tease.. I am Genevieve Anoushka, I quite like my name but I have two last names so its super long and I often got called Ging-A-Heave...I am not even Ginga!!

Roger..... Not one you hear anymore and such a strong name for a wee baby lol. It makes me giggle everytime I think about naming a wee tiny baby Roger!

I spose we don't see many 70-80's names now cos they are common among the mums that are naming the babies now and we might think that they are kind of "ordinary" cos we grew up with them.

crossed my mind about the Sarah's as well use to be as common as Emma but i know of babies called emma but no Sarah's.

if we have a girl her middle name will be Joyce my defult lol, its my middle name and my mums and her mums etc so will keep it going, I use to hate it but now its nice, I still wouldnt use it for a 1st name though.

A lot of Samoan girls are called Agnes or Aggie because of Aggie Grey who was a british settlers daughter. I can't remember the exact story DP has told me but she did alot for the community from memory. Her son I believe is still alive and lives on the island he is a very european looking man but can speak Samoan fluently. So most families will have at least one Aggie/Agnes in it. DP's does.

Oh and alot of them will have a Fa'afetai tele lava or Fa'afetai which means thank you very much or thank you. You never here of any Cindy's or Tracey's or that sort of name that was popular in the 80's.

Lol my grandad's name is Bruce. I always struggle to imagine a child with that name as it just sounds all grown up.
But then my other Grandad is Jack which is still very popular.
And my grandmother's names, Evelyn and Elsie seem to be making huge comebacks whereas names from my generation and my parents generation don't seem to be popular.

I really like Basil and Cyril, they are actually on the rise those old fashioned names.

As for Agnes it is very common for P.I ladies as it can be short for Akenese or variations of that name.

I think the names I dont like are ones that Shaneekwa etc, those made up names.
