Topic: Chewing food for your baby. Posted: 26 February 2010 at 9:06am |
just curious, does anyone ever chew food up for their children?
maia was watching me eat cashews the other day and desperately wanted some so i gave her a taste of some that i had already chewed (i know, it sounds super gross) and she went nuts (sorry about the pun ) for it. i didn't get to eat any myself after that because she was constantly at me for more, i couldn't chew it up fast enough!
so are there any other mummys out there who do this or am i just a weirdo?

I've given chewed food as a taste & then given the whole food. Obviously not a good idea with nuts so the way you are doing it is probably the best, but be aware that your mouth contains more nasty stuff than a babies one does. I remember being warned not to let my baby use my toothbrush cause of what we contain in our mouth.

I have heard of african tribes (or maybe not african but YKWIM) who chew their starchy food to put an enzyme on it.

If I didn't find the idea so gross I'd do it!
(I'm not good with things like that)

ewww no way! i am not a bird/wild animal lol! Plus the inside of our mouths arent hygienic. (ps: I wouldnt give Thomas a whole nut either - he tends to inhale his food - typical male - and would choke on it)

I don't find it strange I have done it and will probably do it again. I've seen our dog try and lick inside Ava's mouth before when she crawls around with it open- thats kinda gross (she hasn't done it yet)

Although if you believe the BLW train of thought our ancestors simply gave their babies whole food when they were ready for it. I wasn't there though so I don't know.
Each to their own and I'm not passing judgement on anyone but I'm with Charly, I know there are many million bacteria living in the human mouth and the idea simply grosses me out... for ick factor it's right up there with my MILs constant suggestions that I should spit in my kids hair to make it curly

Nah I have no problem with it, I think its quite cool and did it a few times when out and needed to feed a toddler something they couldn't handle.

I just had to peel the skin off an apricot for Ava's dessert (with my teeth) as she is refusing all fruit skins at the moment

I dont have a problem with it... kids put far more disgusting things in their mouths when we are not watching than a bit of pre chewed food.. and yup some cultures chew starchy food as it releases and enzyme which makes it easier to digest. Babies without teeth maybe be able to eat the food but without teeth they wont produce the enzyme..
Normally I would add a link about this but I dont have the energy, I do know that a friends paed actually told her not to give her baby rice until he had teeth for this reason....

I don't even share a spoon or cup with Chloe and Ollie, let alone give them food from my mouth, but that's probably because we have endless illnesses circulating in Dunedin and I don't want anything to be passed on unnecessarily. I don't like the idea of sharing body fluids with people, although my children obviously don't agree with me because they dribble on everyone and everything
