Theres a huge difference between wiping a pooey bum thats been squelched and spread around in a nappy and wiping up after you've sat on a toilet and everythings gone into that. I mean even with my 3yo theres barely anything at all to be cleaned up. Ever have to wash skiddy undies? Cloth TP is even better than that.
I like the environmental factor, cutting back on production energy, packaging, use of wood and so on. I always think that just because society thinks something is acceptable doesn't mean that it is. Tobacco has been a hugely accepted part of our culture and others for a very long time. Clearly what society accepts at various stages of its (un)development doesn't make it the healthiest option. |
If you're concerned about the environment why wouldn't you get an outside loo that didn't flush? When I stayed in Waiheke as is often the practice amongst the hippies there (haha) I had to pee out on the lawn (not fun in the dark and cold trust me) and #2 in the outside loo using ordinary TP and covering with sawdust. All biodegradable.

someone mentioned undies and it reminded me of something i saw on Dr Oz. He was saying that g strings can be quite bad as the bacteria from your anus can travel along the string and cause infections! Eeeew!!! I think if we did family cloth i would make my husband rinse his own pooh cloth!

Why do some of you think it will be loads more washing? If you have a couple of tissue boxs full then thats not loads more, about the size of 2 nappies! I get that the bits will be fiddly to hang out.... Anyway, each to their own i guess.

Bizzy - researching recurrent UTIs I've seen g-strings being referred to as 'E-coli highways'. Eww.

because I would not want to wash pee or poo rags with our clothes, so it would require an extra load everyday (as I wouldn't want to leave them any longer unwashed). With three kids and 2 adults we have enough washing atm, infact in winter it is near impossible to keep up... so thank goodness for toilet paper

Actually chickie where I live thats exactly what we do. Our composting toilet is across the paddock and yep I pee out on the lawn in the dark and cold (mainly coz I'm scared of the dark and refuse to go across to the loo by myself at night and DH won't go with me every 5 minutes after I've sculled a couple of litres of water and need to pee constantly LOL). When we get around to building our own place we'll definitely use composting toilets rather than normal ones though ours will def be inside
Family cloth isn't something that I feel particularly strongly about like I do about say eating naturally (I want to whack so many peoples heads together for filling their kids up on crap!) and yes we buy toilet paper - 40 rolls for $10 from the wuddyfuddy atm coz about a quarter get rained on or stolen by the wekas and I'm not spending the extra on the eco-friendly stuff to have it wasted. I'm just saying its not as disgusting or as much effort as some of you seem to think and it really is a viable option. I'd def be quite happy to use family cloth while my children are in nappies. In saying that I'm not sure what I'd do once I didn't have that extra washing to make up a load though.

I have to be quite honest and say I just don't care enough about the environment to use cloth wipes for the loo! I think my big smelly 4wd probably has more impact than my 4 rolls of TP a week
Good on you/more power to you if thats your thing tho!
