ARGH! My DD is driving me batty! She will not settle. I do the feed, play, sleep routine, and her first tired sign is jerky movements, so I put a clean nappy one, give her a small cuddle, put her in her gogo bag then off to bed. I usually go back in a couple of minutes later to burp her (bloody wind), then leave her to it. She has now been grizzling for over an hour, i have patted and shushed her, she settles down, then as soon as i leave she starts again. I am about to go rock her, only thing is im about to move her into her cot so I wont be able to do this anymore. This happens every day without fail. I try not to get stressed, run through the whole list of things, but she is still not settling. oh and she is not teething, nothing there. GAH!

What if you put her down drowsy and then gradually increase the wakefulness and see if that helps her learn to self settle?

It is so hard isn't it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big

My DS didn't learn to self settle till about four months I think and until then I just did WHATEVER it took to settle him

Usually this meant either taking him out in the pram or sometimes the car.

Have you tried white noise? If my son is overtired and won't settle this usually helps him to drift off more easily.

No probably not teething at 3mo... I would try keeping her up a little later such as what Chelle suggested. If you put her down when she's more tired she'll go off to sleep easier. About that time I stopped looking at tired signs and increased DS's awake time by maybe half an hour and it made a huge difference. Whenever I started battling to get him down to sleep I tried extending his awake time and it worked almost every time... worth a go!

Do you have a Plunket Family centre (Karitane Centre) near you? If so, they may be worht a visit. I went to ours when DD was only a few weeks old with BF troubles and all the other mums that were there that day were dealing with sleep/settling issues. They sit with you for a day or half day and watch what you are doing & offer suggestions. You don't need a referral or anything, just give them a call.

How long is your cycle. The jerky signs are usually a late tired sign so maybe you've missed & very easy too, the earlier signs?

I agree, go see plunket & see if they can help.

I get her up, feed her, change, tummy time, play on her back. She shows NO other signs, no yawning, rubbing eyes, pulling ears, staring. She is only up for 40mins- a hour, and she doesnt get drowsey, she will happily stay up for hours wide awake, but tired. And she refuses to sleep while we are out, and I can't get her to fall asleep on me, even at home.

Some days she will go down easy as, and then the next sleep she wont, I do everything the same! I think ill try to keep her up a bit longer and see if that helps, the karitane centre only operates one night a week at like 6pm or something stupid, she is in bed by then! Plus the plunket here, is in a right muddle and the lady I would have to see drives me batty, very very loud and opinionated.

Well today is going to be a good day i have decided. I shall keep her up longer and give the white noise a go, fingers crossed.

White noise and swaddling were really helpful for us as they were cues that it was sleep time. In saying that, Cooper still doesn't self settle... what I was meaning, rather than waiting for him to be drowsy was I meant something like rock him or pat and shush till drowsy before putting him down so he's going to sleep by himself for that last bit and then gradually increase the wakefulness - that's what I'm aiming to do at the moment

Hopefully keeping her up a bit more helps, as I remember around the same time the tired signs stopped working too. We went quite quickly from 45mins up to an hour to 1.5hrs, even up to 2 hours - being up longer makes it much easier to get out and about if your baby doesn't like sleeping when you're out (Cooper is the same, though a sling worked pretty well.)
