My charming 9 month old has decided that 5.30 am is the *perfect* time to wake up. DH and I strongly disagree. How do we get him to realise that he's wrong and that 7am is a good wakeup (actually, at this point, I'll take anything after 6am). Do we just go in, settle, give dummy and go back to bed to bury our heads under pillows? If so, does this work???

Have you looked at the Baby Whisperer website. I have one of her books and it mentions something called "Wake to Sleep" where you wake them before 5.30am (in your case) and change the nappy say something about it not being time to get up yet and putting them back to bed. They say its a way of resetting their body clock. Sounds kinda scary but they say it does work.

For us I just go in and put the dummy in and sometimes I do this alot between 5.30 & 7 but I dont get DD up until 6.30 at the earliest, but she is alot younger so its probably different.

Hope you find a solution that works for you.

We have the same problem and have had it from about the same age...

We just about had it sorted, he moved his wake up time to 6.30am and we were stoked! And then daylight savings changed everything. He now wakes at around 5am - we don't get him up until 6am, but he is definitely awake and will not settle back down.

I have heard about the waking before they wake and settling them back down, not brave enough to try it here... but will keep watching this space!

Caden does this as well Fliss he will wake up and either cry and I mean CRY, or he will chatter away to himself, if he crys I go in and put his dummy in, turn his music on and go back to bed, he often kicks up a stink, but 9/10 goes back to sleep, or I go back to sleep and he has no choice but to stay in bed lol(I know I'm a mean mummy lol)
If he is chatting to himself, I just leave him to it, and he does go back to sleep most times, if he doesn't then I'll get him up or give him a bottle in bed when DH goes to work at 6.30.

we used to have this problem with Ella and when she woken up I used to turn on some white noise and she would go back to sleep. Eventually she grew out of it and now normally wakes up at 7.

But wanted to say when Sheena said about Caden chatting to himself, I love the sound of babies chatting to themselves, so cute (tho not at 5:30 in the morning I guess )

We had a similar problem - only it was somewhere between 2 and 4am. I checked out the sleep store stuff on night waking / early waking and it's solved out problem. They suggest things like moving the first sleep of the day forward by another half an hour, making sure it's not too light in the room, making sure they're not cold etc etc etc. I've referred to the sleep store website a lot and have always found something on there to help.

Yeah I second the sleep store website!! Am gonna try some of the tips for Jake as hes waking up when DP gets up at 5 even though hes still tired. Their advice has worked for other sleep issues we've had so I'm feeling pretty positive.

I actually think that wake before it's time to wake up and settle them back down works. We inadvertantly do that every now and then if Sam wakes between 4-5AM then I tell him it's still night time and that he needs to go back to sleep and 9 times out of 10 it works and he will sleep till at least 8AM which is BLISS!   I would purposefully get up at that time to see if it works but I don't think I can drag myself out of bed at that time!
