Hi guys, Had an interesting experience today at work

I called and made an appointment with the hairdresser to get my roots done. Got off the phone and someone at work said ' you know you can't get your hair bleached now that you're pregnant'

I nearly fell off my stool, what the ..??

Then someone else leaned over and said it's fine to get your hair done / bleached as the amount is so small that it would never be absorbed into the skin in anough amounts to effect the baby.

What have you guys been told?

I'm getting mine done tomorrow -the hairdresser said the product they use is safe (and the salon belongs to my SIL so she would be in big Sh%t if it wasn't true). Also, if you google it, lots of info about it being safe comes up.

I was worried that I would be too lazy to get my hair done once I get further down the track, so i have been streaking it with a darker shade of blond which looks really natural. it also means instead of getting hair done every 4 wks, i can now have 8 wks between appts, so saves $$ too :-)

Ive had my hair dyed during pg .. ive also had it straightened.

Nine months is a long time to do nothing with your hair lol (and it makes you feel pretty).

The amount is minimal that is on the scalp, the fumes get to you later in pg, just ask to sit near an open door.

I saw on a hair salon show thing once that is all crap about not being able to die your hair when your pregnant. People just over react about everything these days!!

I didn't do my roots at all! My hairdresser was pregnant at the same time and wouldn't do hers and even wouldn't do her customers and she worked at a top salon. I guess its a personal thing - so do what you are happy with.

I've had mine done during this pregnancy a couple times too. No issues there, and my hairdresser would definitely mention it if it wasn't safe. My MW said she hadn't heard of any issues but to be safe would avoid just in case. I didn't listen to her there.

apparently foils are the safest as not much of the product actually touches the skin. With all over colour much more of the product and chemicals touch the skin making the chance more of it being absorbed into your blood. I have read that studies say the tests to test the safety of hair chemicals on animals during pregnancy tested at levels that are higher than what you would be exposed to. Having said that. I rather went for foils as it is said to be safer and my hairdresser was really careful not to get too close to my skin with the product. Didn't want to take any chances.

I had my hair done about 4 weeks ago and I'm booked in again twice before xmas. I get foils and a base colour. I talked to a good friend of mine who is a hairdresser about it and she said it is absolutley fine. She had her hair dyed a few times during her own pregnancy too.

I had mine done 2 weeks before giving birth so I wouldn't feel like total cr%p in hospital Maybe just mention to the hair dresser that your pregnant just in case. But really I think it's all rubbish about not dying your hair.

Like Lisa, as I'm due in the next month or so I'm going to get mine done this week as I can't stand the re-growth anymore. I have delayed getting my hair down and have horride re-growth - I refuse to look any worse in pictures than I do now. So, it's off to the hairdresser for me. I know it will make me feel better!

The research I've read states that its one of those things they don't actually know if it harms the baby or not.

Most advice is that as long as you inform your hairdresser that your pregnant there is no reason not to dye your hair. I think the fumes would probably be the worst part, for you, not the baby.

I've continued to dye my hair through this pregnancy and did the same last time around too - it's hard enough feeling semi-attractive when you are the size of a whale, let alone being a whale with root regrowth!

If you're concerned about it, you could go for an organic colour. I switched to organic about a year ago after doing a bit of research on the subject. Normal dyes were giving me headaches and making my scalp sting. I'm still surpised at how well organic colour looks and feels and it lasts longer in my hair, too.

I go to Hue, who have a lot of pregnant customers coming in for organic colour. It's not like that horrible henna stuff – it's really good. You can get foils and everything.

Stefan Marr also do it and so does Nada, if you live in Aucks.

I get mine done every few weeks, and my hairdresser said some people do think it can be dangerous but having highlights / roots done should be fine.

I didnt get my hair dyed when pregnant as I was cautious about everything! Looking back, I have no idea why I thought that dying hair could effect an unborn baby- ridiculous. Possibly the fumes arent the best, but it's a one off (i did lots of painting when pregnant btw, and my girl is perfect). I wil continute to dye hairnext time, possibly avoid it until 13 weeks though.
