Topic: Anyone from the UK? Posted: 05 September 2012 at 3:35pm |
Hi!
I've recently moved over here from the UK with my 10 month old daughter and hubby. Is there anyone out there who can offer me advice re any differences in bringing up a baby here compared with the UK?
Thanks in advance, Katy x

Hello! We are from the south-east of England and moved over here in January. We have an almost 18 month old keeping me on the edge of my seat on a daily basis now and I'm 7 months pregnant with our second - exciting times!
Where are you based? We're in Wellington. How are you finding things so far...not long til summer!

Hi Katy
We are from the UK too. We are having our first child this December. We are based in Auckland. If you are nearby and fancy meeting up just give us a shout. We are originally from Buckinghamshire, where abouts have you travelled from?

Just realised that I didn't actually answer any of your questions!
1. The health visitor equivalent here is called Plunkett. Your suburb will have a Plunket nurse. I would recommend registering with them. Our dd was 9 months when we moved and was almost 11 months by the time we moved to our current house so I was a bit worried about her weight - with the whole emigration, change of diet etc. Whereas you can go to weekly weigh-ins in UK and speak to your HV, you will need to book an appointment with your PN beforehand. My first appointment took 3 weeks booking in advance.
2. Register with a GP. It isn't all free here for under 18's. My dd went to the doc this week - the appointment was free but part of the prescription cost. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for working out what costs and what doesn't!
3. Nappies....hmmmm...we struggled to find a nappy that worked as well as Pampers so ended up ordering from Auckland and spwnding a small fortune on them! Our choice - I know a lot of people have adjusted to Huggies or Treasures well - they just didn't work for us.
4. You'll find the cost of all baby/child related products cost a LOT more here and the quality not always better. I hope you shipped lots or have understanding family to send you bits!
Is there anything in particular that you wanted to know?

Hi Katy, where ru in NZ?? I moved here nearly 2yrs ago (Auckland east) I lived in sth London, Sussex and Wiltshire. I love it here. I have 4 children 3 born in uk and my 8m was born here. It just takes getting used to different things in supermarkets etc but overall I have found no huge differences. The maternity services are much better just in case you are planning no 2 ;0)). I have a great network of friends here and also have a group of uk mums who meet every week so if you are up this way you are welcome to come along :0) all the best for your new adventure!! Samantha x

Hi Katy, welcome to NZ! I hope you are feeling a bit more settled, summer is finally on it's way too! My name is Tania and I have been here nearly 6 years now, originally from Cardiff. I have a little boy who is 19 months and live in Auckland. Where abouts are you? I can't really offer too much advice in terms of comparisons but can help with any general questions! I too struggled to find a nappy that worked for me, you can get pampers in New World sometime but I now use BabyLove and they are really good, the only one's that keep my little boy dry through the night! If you need to buy baby things then Trademe is your best bet for second hand things. We go to Mainly music and playcentre, they are available all over so just have a look on the net and see if you can find your nearest one. It depends on where you live as to whats available though, that's something I have noticed from the UK, friends back home seem to have heaps of choice when it comes to activities but here it does depend on where you live. I am always keen for a meet up :0)

Hello everyone! Sorry it's taken so long to reply. I'm Katy and I moved over nearly 3 weeks ago from East Sussex. We are here for my husbands work, about 2/3 years. We are in Christchurch, shame you are all in North Island. I think there are some music baby groups near where we will be living, somhope i can make a friend or two soon. Gets a bit lonely when hubby at work. Currently in a hotel, have been for nearly 3 weeks. Driving me a bit mad, itching to get back into a kitchen and get bubs back on my one cooking rather than jars and pouches. And to have our own rooms again! Thanks for your advice re the HV equivalents, and nappies etc. We seem to be lucky that my dd fits in the Little Treasures. Not sure if there will be a number 2 yet...hmmm we shall see, everyone thinks we'll come back home with another though! Good to know the maternity care is good over here, just in case as you say We are off to buy a cot etc, have looked around and they are rather pricey compared to at home. Oh how I miss Mothercare and Amazon already. Find it amazing you don't have Amazon here. Trade me seems to be ok, certainly helped us find a home anyway. Thanks for you all replying, would like to stay in touch? Katy x

Hi & welcome to NZ :)
I am not from UK originally but lived in London for a few years and had our first son there. We came back to NZ permanently when he was 5 months old and have since had another baby.
I miss UK shopping so much - esp Mothercare, Next, Gap & Marks & Spencer. Fortunately they all deliver to NZ so I get lots of stuff from them online. Even with shipping it is cheaper (and I think better quality) than you get here. If you shop smart you can avoid the import duty and GST charges (see below).
These are the websites:
www.next.co.uk (scroll down to the bottom and click on the link to their NZ site which has prices in NZD and FREE shipping) www.mothercare.co.uk www.marksandspencer.com www.gap.com (when you first visit it will ask you for your country and then display prices in that currency).
Shipping costs:
Next - free shipping (as long as you buy from the NZ website) M&S - 15 GBP to NZ (regardless of amount purchased) Mothercare - there is a set fee then an additional amount based on the weight of your order. So you don't know how much until you get to the end. Mine is usually about 30 GBP for a pretty big order. I haven't actually got anything delivered from Gap yet as my husband went on a trip to the States and picked it up for me. It says free delivery on the site but that's only for delivery within the US.
To avoid import duty and GST you have to keep the total bill for each order, including shipping, under NZD $400 (baby clothes are exempt from import duty anyway but not GST) at this end. Or you could split your order into multiple deliveries but then you have to pay multiple lots of shipping - not an issue if shipping is free obviously. That rule applies to anything you get sent - so if you order stuff from amazon you can avoid those charges as long as the total bill, including shipping, is less than $400 NZD. I have had deliveries from both the US Amazon site and the UK one. Not everything can be delivered though, you don't know until you try to order (or sometimes it has that info in the details section).
I got my stuff from Mothercare within 3-5 days of ordering. M&S took just over a week. Next was about 10 or 12 days.
Unfortunately Mothercare and M&S won't deliver all the products they sell to NZ, it's basically just clothes.
In terms of equivalencies between the UK and NZ - I find that BabyCity (www.babycity.co.nz) is probably the closest to Mothercare, although doesn't have quite as much stuff. www.babyuniverse.co.nz is good too. You can't get Dentinox shampoo here which is super annoying! The closest thing is Mustela shampoo which I have only found at BabyCity. We used Pampers nappies in the UK and use Huggies here, although to be honest that's the only brand I've tried.
As well as Mainly Music I would also check out your local library, the ones in Wellington all have a free "Baby Rock 'n Rhyme" session once a week, which is a singalong similar to MM but different songs (and without religious references).
Ummm that's all I can think of for now but feel free to ask any questions about online shopping, I'm an expert!

Hi Katy Welcome to Christchurch. Hubby and I lived in London for almost 5 years, now back in Chch and expecting our first baby in a month. Yes baby equipment and shops are very different to in the UK (I worked as a maternity nurse there) and lifestyle pretty different too.
Taking your child swimming is popular, can be hard sometimes to get enrolled in a class but you'll find the pools busy with tots and mums most days just playing.
Gymbaroo classes can be fun for kids, include exercising to music, dancing, balance and co-ordination, they have classes from baby - school age www.gymbaroochchsouth.co.nz
The parents centre www.parentscentre.org.nz
Plunket will likely know of a playgroup in your area and should be able to connect you up with them http://www.plunket.org.nz/plunket-near-you/?region=Canterbury&district=Christchurch+City&suburb=&service=Play+groups
Else you could always look at joining playcentre (an early childhood education centre) that is very hands on for parents www.canterburyplaycentre.org.nz/ (not just a drop your kid and run away place)
There's 2 big indoor playgrounds www.chipmunks.co.nz/playtime Can get pretty busy and sometimes overwhelming for little ones, depending on your bubs personality, worth knowing about tho!
The great thing about chch is that there's plenty of small playgrounds dotted around the city, bound to be one close to where you end up living.
Hope some of this helps :) Deb

Rickers - do you mean you are using the hospital midwives at Wellington Hospital? If so I can personally assure you they are fantastic and you are in excellent hands - definitely don't worry about having your "own" midwife.

Check with them at you next appointment but I think yes, you just ring the delivery suite to let them know things have started, and you will probably keep in phone contact with them while you labour at home, letting them know when your waters break, when the contractions become regular etc. That exactly how they do it in the UK (where DS1 was born). Even if you have your "own" midwife, they don't usually come to the person's house straight away as these things can take hours or even days - in either case the midwife will decide what's best depending on how your labour is going. eg there may not be time for anyone to come to your house anyway, you may need to go straight to hospital! Here's hoping for a nice quick labour for you :)
