Topic: When to go off the pill before TTC Posted: 02 October 2011 at 6:22pm |
Hi everyone. So my husband and I have decided to start trying for our first baby in September 2012. I will be 37 by then, and have been on the pill since I was 18. I was thinking of going off the pill 6 months beforehand to try and re-regulate my periods. Does this sound about the right timeframe? Apologies if there was already a thread in relation to this.

Hi cridic1975, I would say AT LEAST six months. I was on the pill for about 12 years and came off earlier this year in February and I am only just getting my cycles back to normal now. Everybody is different though. If you would really like to conceive next year, I would even think about coming off the pill sooner, that way you will hopefully be ready to go when you want to. If you were to start charting (taking temps and watching other fertility signs) it makes it much easier to see you when you ovulate so you can avoid baby dancing around ovulation to avoid pregnancy until you are both ready in September next year. Good luck with everything

I tend to agree with TripleJ...the longer you can have off the pill the better. You might be lucky and your cycles return to normal pretty quickly but you also might not. I came off the pill in Jan, conceived in Dec and had some really messed up cycles in between! I also have PCOS though so that could've affected things too.
You can always use alternative contraceptive methods in the meantime that don't affect your hormones.
And good luck!

Thanks TripleJ and Jaune, and thanks for the welcome.
Will look into going off at the beginning of the year then, give me a bit more time.

Yeah I would...the longer the better, just in case...then you're more likely to conceive when you want to.

I just today started taking Folic Acid too. As I have been told to start taking it at least or around 3 months before TTC

I was on the pill for 4 yrs, came off it, wasn't TTC but still got preg within 4 months (I was 7 wks preg at the 4 month off the pill mark!)so be aware that you may be one of the lucky people who are ovulating, etc almost straight away

Well I'm on strict instructions to stick to the timeframe, so will have to double up on extra protection in the meantime then... hehe.

Agreed. Go off it as soon as you can...I want to add something though. If you go off it and your cycles return to normal immediately please don't be tempted to try too soon. Give it at least 2 cycles for you body to sort itself out before you even try. I have 3 friends and myself that all had miscarriages after concieving the month after we stopped the pill and I am kind of thinking that it is too much of a coincidence. So off it now...give it 2 months and then enjoy it for a couple of months before you start charting or anything serious.
