Topic: OT: Does anyone suffer fromTMJ? Posted: 30 September 2011 at 11:39am |
It is a temporomandibular disorder?
Have you found anything that stops the horrendous click in the jaw?
I have been referred to a jaw specialist that comes over from Australia every few months.

I had my jaw flushed when I was younger & had to wear an awful plate at night, my jaw used to lock though. My Oral surgeon just did it all. The next step was to replace the disc in there.
There is a youtube video on how to massage the muscles of the jaw that is worth looking at, I can't remember what it was but it was a guy showing you how to do it.

My DH had acupuncture which made a huge difference. He also is more aware of when his TMJ is coming on and finds massaging it then prevents it getting worse. Have you seen a physio or dentist who specialises in TMJ problems (other than the visiting Oz guy?)

i have a TMJ problem, i saw the local dental school (i'm in dunedin) and had a wee splint made to wear at night. is there anything like that in CHCH?
they also gave me jaw exercises to do, and i find massaging works well too. my problem is now very intermittent, it was vastly improved by the splint and now i only wear it when i feel the pain coming on. good luck, hope you find a solution soon

I went to the dentist today, the guy said it is the worst click/bang he has ever heard. Other than that, he referred me to this guy. I may not get to see him for a couple months. 10 min appointment and $50 later and that is all i got.
It is terribly deafening in my head. It is every time i open my mouth and now after a year, i can feel fits of bone when i am closing my mouth again. It is really starting to hurt now.

I have something going on in there, my jaw clicks like a mofo it got so bad one day I couldn't open my mouth far enough to even put a fork in to eat.
Hmmm maybe I need to go to the dentist or see how much SIL's boss is he is apparently a great physio who can work on things like that but dammit can't claim ACC.
When I went to the Dr he prescribed antiflams.
Just googling it that could be one of the reasons I get headaches all the time hmmm Dr google you are not my friend lol

MissCandice part of the difficulty is that it really needs to be assessed properly - which is why the Dentist needs to refer you on. I'm surprised there isn't anyone in Chch who can do it though. Does Chch hospital have an Oral Health dept? Should be easy enough to find out. If they do I'd give them a ring and ask them whether they assess and manage TMJ issues (I would be surprised if they don't) if you want to try and see someone earlier.

blessedmama, they have referred me in Christchurch, but the only guy that does it comes over from Australia to take our referrals. He comes over every couple of months for a month to take patients.

That's a shame but chances are you might wait that long I guess to see someone anyway. I hope he can sort things for you.
