I have an infection in my mouth where my wisdom tooth is coming through and i've been given antibiotics by my dentist to clear it up. I made it very clear i'm breastfeeding a young baby and he got his books out and rang someone to find antibiotics for me.

HOWEVER the pharmacist where i got them said they WERENT recommended for b/feeding and sure enough, on the information sheet it says so. A quick google suggests that i may want to stop breastfeeding while taking the course and that its absolutely not recommended!

The pharmacist said if i can leave the biggest gap possible between taking the pill and feeding the better and that only 10% will go into the milk so it should be fine.

So my questions are: Who do i call to get the best information on? Plunket? Healthline? GP? I'm not under a m/w care anymore.
What can i expect the effects to be on the baby? What should i be looking for (a fever? sore tum? rash??)

I am considering not taking the antibiotics now but i am being tortured by this f'ing tooth, it can't go on!

ETA:

Dentist says safe
Pharmacist says not safe but should be ok if i take it as far from feeding as possible.
Plunket says they consider it safe but the pharmacist is the expert
2nd Pharmacist says he would not recommend it during lactation.
Now i'm on to the nurse at the GP's...

What exactly is considered a 'safe' time between pill and feeding? Pharmacist didnt know.

I had to go on AB's with a really bad breast infection. They made DS very upset with a sore tummy and constipated. I took those inner health plus probiotics and that seemed to help both me and bub.

Did the pharmacist make any suggestion about whether you could have an alternative antibiotic?

Thomas Hale's website is really good - it's collated all the studies about different drugs and BFing. I think LLL also have some resources about drugs and BFing too.

"Safe" with drugs when BFing and in PG is also a hard one - drugs are rarely tested in this population for ethical reasons. They might be able to measure the concentration of the drug in breastmilk, but not the effect. I think they have 4 levels of safety. 1 being Absolutely not, 4 being fine.

"Safe time" would depend on the drug - they all have different rates at which they travel through the body. That's where the pharmacist will know their stuff. Depending on that rate, it's also hard to find "safe times" when your baby is 5 weeks, and probably feeding fairly frequently!

The GP ended up giving me a different antibiotic but when i went to pick it up the pharmacist said the same thing - not safe for b/feeding!!

However plunket rated it a level 2 out of 5 (5 being the worst) and when i saw the pediatrician for an unrelated thing this arvo he said it should be fine as well and that they often say not recommended just to be safe as no one actually does trials on breastfeeding moms and drugs!

Hila great thinking i will take the probiotics just in case.

Jeepers! What a run around. I hope you feel better soon

For what it's worth, I'd probably take it too.
