Topic: Before TTC Posted: 29 January 2011 at 9:49am |
Hi there
Our first baby was a lovely surprise baby so planning for the next one is all foreign to me! I would like to ask a couple of questions if thats ok!
1) Is it important to come off the pill for a few months before trying?
2) When should you start taking a pregnancy multivitamin?
Last time I was on the pill, and just started taking the vitamin when I found out I was preg but this time I feel like I should be doing it all the 'right' way!

I think TTC is a lucky dip. Some fall while on the pill, some as soon as they come off & others it an take longer to get pg for no reason.
If you want to start stress free I would come off the pill BD around OV (every 2 day if poss), take folic acid from now onwards.
You may fall pg straight away so plan it for when you are ready.

I got pregnant 1st (DS) and 2nd (DD) month after stopping pill - so I am all for the trying straight after stopping pill, but I know some people aren't that keen to do that. (not sure whether there is any medical reason?)
I would start on folic acid straight away and then move onto a pregnancy multivitamin when you get a BFP - that way you are covering both bases.

With DD I started taking pregnancy vitamins 3 months before stopping my bcp. Then stopped the pill and was pregnant a month later (wasnt expecting it that quick but there you go).
We are planning to ttc#2 soon and so ive been taking vitamins again since the start of dec so I will have for 3 months again just in case I get pg as quickly again.
So to answer you questions:
1/ no you dont have to but like bel says, there could be a mecial reason to give yourself a month or two
2/ start taking folic acid for up to 3 months before hand and change to a preg vit when you get a bfp (so again, what bel said)
Good luck ttc

My 2 cents
For your emotional wellbeing I would recommend planning for a longish journey, and if it happens within the first few months then YAY easy and stress free always the best. Its alot better than thinking the other way and each month being upset that it hasn't happened yet. I had my heart set on a honeymoon baby (my first cycle off bcp) but our 2nd anniversary has came and gone and still no precious bundle.
Start folic acid NOW!

I was told by my doctor (and have read a lot) that it is perfectly safe to start TTC straight off the pill so I wouldn't worry about that. What I would say though is that your cycles might be all over the place for some time after stopping the pill so be prepared for a delay in getting things back to normal.
That's not to say you can't get UTD straight away, many people do, but it could take some time for your body to find it's rhythm. I stopped my BCP at the beginning of November, had one cycle of 40 days and am still ont the second cycle - day 51 now!
Therefore I would recommend coming off the BCP as soon as possible before you want to TTC to help let your body get back on track but be aware that you may well get UTD straight away if you are BDing during that time without any other protection
Good luck for the exciting journey ahead!!
ETA - I would also recommend using OPKs as soon as possible so that you can get an idea of when you are OVing even if your cycles are all over the place.

My GP said to start folic acid as soon as you come of BCP. I conceived the first month off and was very surprised... unfortunately ended in MC 13 weeks later :( so as jem said, I would still plan for a longish journey as in 9 months I haven't conceived again - I'm attributing it to my body now having to adjust being off BCP. I started taking a multivitamin at about 6 weeks as I was concerned my diet wasn't rich enough in Omega 3 (living so far inland).
Hope this helps and best of luck...

I started taking folic acid 3 months before TTC. I personally would prob wait a month or two after coming off BCP, mainly cos I know of quite a few people having miscarriages after conceiving straight after coming off it.
