Topic: Wrapping - when to wean? Posted: 13 January 2011 at 11:33am |
DS is now one and has been wrapped for every sleep since birth. I have tried him a couple of times without it but he generally wakes after 20 or so minutes. He is getting one arm out at the moment but can't seem to get himself back to sleep when he wakes between cycles until I tuck it back in for him. But the fact he happily sleeps with an arm out has made me wonder if he is ready to be weaned off the wrapping.
So, my question is, how did you know when your LO was ready to wean? Or, what made you decide to wean from wrapping?

I weaned DD from wrapping when she was 7 months as it was summer and I just felt it was far to hot to be wrapped(I wouldnt want to be wrapped lol).
I just went cold turkey! Took her a while to resettle, but giving her a bit of my clothing seemed to help her re settle.

About 3-4 months for us when she turned into a major escape artist and was getting cold overnight with no blankets so went cold turkey to a sleeping bag

No help, I know, but I'm wondering about that with Jacob at the moment. He keeps escaping his wrap, but when he does, he gets his dummy out and can't get to sleep. I can't wait till he has enough co-ordination to put it back in!

as your boy is a bit older than most being weaned off wrapping it is more of a sleep association. Maybe try wrapping him a bit looser each night and do it as a gradual thing.
Also have a look at The Sleep Store website - they have some super advice of heaps issues. Good Luck

We started the process around 8-9 months because my DS kept escaping too. We started with one arm out as well, but I think the key was to start with the NIGHT sleep instead of the daytime naps? Sounds counterintuitive I know, but apparently they are not so aware and more tired (and less distractions) so it works better. So we started with nights, then when he had one arm out he would often get the other arm out himself, so the transition went pretty smoothly!
Good luck.

We only did it when Alex was around 10 months old and he was waking up all the time because he was getting out of his wrap.
We didn't do cold turkey - we tried the Save Our Sleep's lay down approach. We started with a night time sleep, and each time he stood up in the cot we laid him back down. We did that many many times (there is a number they recommend but I can't remember it) and then we went out of the room. We stayed out until about 25 mins while he protested (and it was hard). Then we went in and kept on lying him down until he stayed lying down and started to settle himself to sleep.
It took about 3 hours the first night, but down to 1.5 hours the second and then the third night it took around 20 mins. It was hard work for that time, but he's settling himself now and doesn't need us in the room to do it.
I'd recommend getting the book out of the library if cold turkey doesn't work for you.

We stopped wrapping at 12 months and just stopped cold turkey. Albeit, we stopped wrapping arms at about 9 months.

We stopped wrapping at 8mths. Cold turkey. And for the first couple of sleeps that day, my daughter took a little while to settle and resettle, but she was fine after that. I think it's just key to keep their sleep times consistent and all other bedding in the cot the same too. At age 1 your son could probably even safely have his wrap in the bed next to him, as a comfort thing maybe?
Good luck!

We did a week long drive holiday car trip thing and Lily just slept once without it and so I kept wrapping her for nights until 8 months but she was unwrapped for day sleeps from 7 months. But like your boy, she'd just pull an arm out... Wake or sometimes not though.
